Endrick's Wait: Ancelotti's Strategy for Brazil's World Cup

Carlo Ancelotti is in no rush. Not with Neymar’s calf, and certainly not with Endrick.

With Brazil navigating their World Cup Group C campaign without their injured talisman, the obvious question has been hanging in the air: if Neymar is out, why isn’t Endrick in?

The teenager, hailed as Brazil’s next great attacking hope, has yet to be used as a direct replacement during the group stage. Neymar missed the opening 1-1 draw against Morocco and will also sit out the clash with Haiti after suffering a Grade 2 strain to his right calf while playing for Santos on May 17. The medical staff have circled the knockout rounds as a realistic target for his return.

That gap in the side was always going to provoke debate. Many expected Endrick to be pushed straight into the spotlight. Ancelotti, though, has drawn a clear line between Neymar’s absence and the teenager’s development.

Asked in an interview why a player widely regarded as an extraordinary talent is still waiting on the sidelines, Ancelotti’s answer was short, pointed and revealing.

“Because I will put Endrick in at the right moment. We have to wait a little. He will be important.”

No ambiguity. No attempt to dress it up. For Ancelotti, this is not about panic-cover for Neymar. It is about timing.

His stance underlines two things at once: Brazil will not rush Neymar back before he is ready, and they will not throw Endrick into a role he is not yet prepared to shoulder, no matter how loud the calls from outside become.

The coach’s repeated insistence that Endrick “will be important” keeps the teenager firmly inside Brazil’s long-term plans. It also explains why he has not yet been used in the way many assumed once Neymar limped out of contention for the group stage.

For now, Brazil’s strategy is clear. Neymar’s recovery is being managed with the knockout rounds in mind. Endrick’s introduction is being managed by something less visible but just as decisive: Ancelotti’s sense of the right moment.

The waiting game continues. The only real question is how long Ancelotti is prepared to hold his nerve before he turns to the young forward on the biggest stage of all.
