Xabi Alonso wants the Enzo Fernández saga off his desk – and quickly.
With Manchester City weighing up a fresh bid and Chelsea still holding firm on a £120m valuation, the midfielder’s future has hung over the summer like a cloud. Real Madrid were the first heavyweight circling, strongly linked earlier in the window before stepping away from the noise. That left the door open for Enzo Maresca’s City, who have now moved into position as the main threat to Chelsea’s plans.
City allowed Chelsea’s deadline for meeting the asking price to pass two weeks ago. It was meant to be a line in the sand. Instead, it has become just another marker in a transfer story that refuses to settle. New reports now suggest the Premier League champions are prepared to come back with an offer anyway.
On the pitch, Chelsea have tried to act as if nothing is happening. Fernández is back in full training and, crucially, back in Alonso’s matchday squad. He started Monday night on the bench but came on in the 65th minute of the Blues’ Premier League opener, helping them edge a 3-2 win and offering a reminder of why Europe’s elite continue to circle.
Alonso, though, cut a pragmatic figure when pressed on the situation after the final whistle.
“In football, I am not surprised by anything,” he told BBC Radio Five Live. “We will see. My wish is that we know what will happen for the future but we will see this week.”
No guarantees. No promises. Just a manager desperate for clarity as he tries to build a team with one of his key pieces stuck in limbo.
Chelsea’s wider strategy for the remainder of the window is clear enough: trim the squad and raise funds. The club are expected to focus on outgoings, with Liam Delap in talks over a move to Nottingham Forest and Mamadou Sarr also closing in on the exit. Nicolas Jackson, Mykhailo Mudryk and Marc Guiu are all candidates to follow, either on loan or permanently, as the hierarchy reshapes the squad around Alonso’s demands. Dario Essugo has been made available for a loan as well.
All of that business matters. None of it, though, carries the weight of the Fernández decision.
City are circling again. Chelsea are holding their price. Alonso wants an answer.
The next week will decide which of them gets what they want.
