Erling Haaland Shines in Norway’s World Cup Debut
One of the most feared forwards in modern football finally stepped onto the World Cup stage. Erling Haaland, the Manchester City striker, played his first World Cup match on Tuesday and instantly left a mark.
Norway claimed a 4–1 victory over Iraq, with Haaland scoring twice to secure the nation’s first World Cup win in 28 years. Few forwards in recent times have matched Haaland’s scoring ability. Before this tournament, he had already netted 351 goals across club and international matches, yet had never played in a senior World Cup.
“To qualify for the World Cup is a really special thing,” Haaland told ESPN ahead of the tournament, reflecting on Norway missing out on the past six editions. “I’m looking forward to it. It’s going to be amazing. Finally.”
At 25 years old and six years after his record-setting nine-goal game at the 2019 U-20 World Cup, Haaland showed why he is considered one of the sport’s best.
A Dream Beginning Against Iraq
The impact was immediate. Within six minutes, Haaland dominated Iraq’s defense. When Zaid Tahseen hesitated on a high ball, Haaland raced in like a freight train, winning the aerial duel and sprinting towards goal. His attempted pass to Alexander Sørloth was saved by the goalkeeper, but the threat was clear.
Before halftime, Haaland scored his first World Cup goal at 29 minutes, connecting with a cross from David Møller Wolfe to put Norway ahead. He then set up a chance for Sørloth, though the shot was blocked. Iraq managed to equalize, but Haaland quickly restored the lead just four minutes later by capitalizing on a goalkeeper’s error, completing a first-half brace in his debut World Cup match.
His defensive work during stoppage time capped off an impressive opening half, with two goals from four shots.
Second Half and Continued Effort
The second half saw less direct influence from Haaland as Iraq grew stronger. Norway struggled to control possession, and Haaland dropped deeper to support teammates but found it harder to connect effectively, missing a few passes.
Though quieter for stretches, he remained dangerous. In the 83rd minute, he had a chance for a hat-trick, but the goalkeeper made a crucial save. Near the end of the match, Haaland showcased his exceptional vertical leap by heading a cross back into the box, leading to a goal credited as an own goal by Ayman Hussein, sealing Norway’s fourth.
Two goals and a near assist helped Norway top Group I, and Haaland proved exactly why he is so highly regarded.
Stats Highlight Haaland’s Impact
Haaland led the match with five shots and recorded the highest number of touches inside Iraq’s penalty area. He has now scored on his debuts in the Bundesliga, Premier League, Champions League, and World Cup.
What’s Next for Norway and Haaland?
Norway’s next match is Monday against Senegal at MetLife Stadium. Senegal will want to bounce back after losing to France, while Haaland and his teammates aim to secure a knockout stage spot with another win.
The final group game, against France at Gillette Stadium on June 26, could determine who tops Group I.
