Daniel Farke Confirms Joe Rodon's Injury Blow for Leeds United
Leeds United have been dealt a major early-season blow, with Daniel Farke confirming that defensive linchpin Joe Rodon will be out for at least eight to 10 weeks with a serious hamstring injury.
The 28-year-old was forced off in clear discomfort during the first half of Sunday’s 1-1 draw with Brentford at Elland Road, and the initial concern has now been backed up by scan results.
“Bad news with him,” Farke admitted ahead of Saturday’s trip to Brighton & Hove Albion. “(He has a) serious hamstring injury and will be out for eight to 10 weeks, so he will definitely not play before the next international break. Also, probably not the first games after the international break. Of course, it’s a big blow for us because he’s a key player, but it’s football and sometimes you have to deal with injuries.”
A cornerstone ripped out
For Farke, this is not just the loss of a name on the teamsheet. It is the removal of a cornerstone from his backline.
Rodon has been central to Leeds’ defensive structure since arriving in 2023. The Wales international underlined his importance in August by signing a new four-year contract, a statement of mutual faith between player and club.
He has already racked up 139 appearances in all competitions for Leeds, chipping in with three goals but, more importantly, bringing authority, aggression and calm to the heart of defence. His absence forces a rethink. Shape, partnerships, leadership – all suddenly up for review.
The timing could hardly be worse. Leeds have opened the campaign with promise: a gritty 1-0 win away at Nottingham Forest on the opening day, followed by that battling home draw with Brentford. They have also moved into the third round of the Carabao Cup, again at Forest’s expense.
Momentum was building. Now Farke has to protect it without his defensive anchor.
Squad-building put to the test
The injury comes just as the dust settles on the summer transfer window, where Leeds moved late to strengthen the squad. Left-back Melvin Bard and winger Jean-Matteo Bahoya arrived to add depth and competition in key areas.
Asked to assess the club’s work in the market, Farke sounded broadly satisfied, while hinting at the fine margins that will define Leeds’ season.
“Not all the wishes are always completely fulfilled, but I would say 90, 95 per cent of what we wanted to do is really good. We also need a bit of luck in the offence, perhaps there are no injuries to some key players,” he said.
That wish for luck has already been denied at the other end of the pitch. The Rodon setback will now shine a harsher light on the club’s defensive options and the decisions made over the summer. Who steps in? Can they replicate his authority? Those answers will come quickly.
A brutal run without their leader
There is no gentle bedding-in period for a reshaped Leeds backline. The schedule turns sharp, fast.
First up is Saturday’s visit to Brighton & Hove Albion, a side that asks constant questions with and without the ball. From there, Leeds head to Stamford Bridge to face Chelsea in the Carabao Cup third round on 9 September – a tie that will stretch both their concentration and their depth.
Then comes Newcastle United at Elland Road on 14 September, another physically demanding, high-tempo test.
Three games, three different challenges. All without the man who usually knits their defensive work together.
Farke has spoken often about resilience, adaptability, the need to ride out storms across a long season. Now that theory collides with reality. Leeds have made a confident start. The question is simple: can they keep their stride without their defensive cornerstone, or will Rodon’s absence reshape the story of their autumn?
