Fifa Revises World Cup Stadium Bottle Ban

Fifa has rowed back on part of its controversial World Cup stadium bottle ban, allowing fans to bring in sealed disposable water as anger grew over the late policy change.

The governing body had sparked criticism after moving to prohibit all bottles – along with cups, jars and cans – on safety grounds, a decision that raised immediate questions about fan welfare and matchday costs at the 2026 tournament.

Under the revised guidance, only hard-sided reusable containers remain outlawed.

“Each spectator can bring with them one 20 ounce (560ml) soft, plastic disposable factory-sealed water bottle into the stadium,” World Cup 2026 chief operating officer Heimo Schirgi confirmed, drawing a clear line between single-use plastic and sturdier refillable flasks.

The message is blunt on what stays outside the turnstiles.

“What is not allowed are hard-sided resealable water containers, which could pose a safety and security risk,” Schirgi said.

The shift leaves fans with at least one guaranteed source of affordable hydration, even as the debate over security, sustainability and supporter experience at the 2026 World Cup rumbles on.
