What began as a debate over the Ballon d’Or briefly threatened to spill into something far more serious inside the France camp. A few pointed words, a hint of wounded pride, and suddenly the national team’s harmony was being questioned.

Mbappé’s words land badly
Kylian Mbappé lit the fuse without meaning to. When speaking about the Ballon d’Or race, the Real Madrid forward drew a clear line between his own career path and that of Ousmane Dembélé.
He underlined how he had been seen “for years” as the player destined to shine, while Dembélé, he said, needed more time because of injuries and the circumstances he faced. The message, in Mbappé’s mind, was context. To others, it sounded like hierarchy.

According to French outlet Foot Mercato, citing Le Parisien, Mbappé quickly understood that his earlier comments had not landed well with Dembélé. The reaction inside and outside the camp made that clear.
So he picked up the phone.
Mbappé took the initiative to contact his France teammate directly, explaining what he had meant and what he had not. The aim was simple: clarify his position, calm any tension, and stop a minor disagreement from becoming a full-blown issue in the dressing room.
Publicly, Mbappé then moved to defuse the row.
“I have already spoken to him about this matter, and there is no tension,” he said. “I don’t think there are any real problems concerning it. I am completely calm.”
Le Parisien reported that the pair reached an amicable understanding. Both players, it said, were determined not to let a personal interpretation of the Ballon d’Or race infect the atmosphere around the national team.
Thuram steps into the middle
One name emerged as a quiet but decisive figure in the background: Marcus Thuram.
The Inter forward helped mediate between Mbappé and Dembélé, using a WhatsApp group that included all three players. In modern football, peace talks often happen on a screen rather than in a meeting room, and this was no different.
Thuram’s role was to ease the conversation, keep it light where it needed to be, serious where it mattered, and make sure any lingering frustration did not harden into resentment.
The effect was swift. The tension, such as it was, dissolved quickly.

Inside the France camp, the message is that the Ballon d’Or debate is back where it belongs: outside the dressing room.
Mbappé and Dembélé have, for the moment, closed the chapter. The focus returns to the pitch, to their shared task in the national shirt, away from the individual battle that first sparked the dispute.
