Gabriel Jesus Chooses Barcelona Over Flamengo to Honor Palmeiras

Gabriel Jesus had options. A return home, a hero’s welcome in Rio, the chance to become the latest star in Flamengo’s constellation. Instead, he chose something else: loyalty to the club that made him and a fresh start in Europe with Barcelona.

The 29-year-old forward confirmed that Flamengo tried to bring him back to Brazil during the summer window, once it became clear his time at Arsenal was coming to an end under Mikel Arteta. The approach was serious. The answer was firm.

“They wanted to talk to me, but I politely said: ‘I really appreciate the contact, but just as there are players from Flamengo's youth academy that you want to come back, I'm also a product of Palmeiras' youth system,’” Jesus told TV Bandeirantes.

For Flamengo, it was a rejection. For Palmeiras, it was a reminder: their academy graduate has not forgotten where he came from.

Arsenal exit, Barcelona lifeline

Jesus arrived at Arsenal with the pedigree of a serial winner from Manchester City, but the London chapter never quite ran as scripted. The Brazilian showed flashes of his Premier League best, yet recurring fitness problems repeatedly halted his rhythm at the Emirates. Each setback nudged him further away from Arteta’s long-term plans.

As uncertainty grew, so did interest. Clubs across Europe and South America circled, sensing opportunity. Flamengo were among the boldest, trying to tempt him back to Brazil with the promise of a leading role in Rio.

Instead, Jesus stayed on this side of the Atlantic. On deadline day, he signed a three-year deal with Barcelona, tying him to the Catalan giants until June 2029. A career that had stalled in north London suddenly had a new stage.

Palmeiras ties run too deep

To understand why Flamengo never truly stood a chance, you have to go back to São Paulo. Jesus joined the Palmeiras academy in 2013 and rose quickly, turning raw potential into decisive performances.

By 2015, he had already been named Campeonato Brasileiro Serie A Best Newcomer and helped Palmeiras lift the Copa do Brasil. A year later, he claimed the prestigious Bola de Ouro as the club ended a 22-year wait for a league title. These were not just seasons; they were foundation stones in his identity as a player.

Across 83 appearances for Palmeiras, he scored 28 goals and provided nine assists. Those numbers built his move to Europe. They also built a bond he is not prepared to break.

“I am Palmeiras, my mind is Palmeiras, 100% Palmeiras in a possible return. I don't know when,” he said, making it clear that if he ever goes back to Brazilian football, there is only one door he plans to knock on.

Barcelona now, Palmeiras later

For now, that return can wait. Jesus has chosen to stay in European football at a club that still expects to compete for the biggest prizes. Barcelona see in him a forward with Champions League experience, a pressing machine who can knit attacks together and still provide goals.

He arrives in Catalonia with something to prove after a stop-start spell at Arsenal, but also with the maturity of a player who knows exactly who he is and where he belongs. Flamengo’s offer tested that. Palmeiras’ pull settled it.

Barcelona get a hungry forward. Palmeiras keep their favourite son’s loyalty. And somewhere down the line, when the European chapter closes, Brazil already knows which shirt he intends to wear.
