Barcelona finally have Gabriel Jesus. Years after first trying to lure him to Camp Nou, the Brazilian forward has arrived from Arsenal in a late, unexpected move for a fee of 10 million euros.

The climate, the style of play, the chance to follow a path similar to Neymar’s – Barcelona had plenty of arguments. But they were not alone in the race, and one decisive voice had yet to be heard.
Pep’s call that changed everything
The “other big club” Jesus referred to was Manchester City. The turning point came not in a boardroom, but on a phone line.
Pep Guardiola called him personally. That conversation, as the player himself has acknowledged, shifted the entire picture.
“I saw that City was really interested in me after speaking with Pep on the phone,” Gabriel Jesus said.
The direct intervention from Guardiola tipped the balance. City’s project, the promise of minutes, and Pep’s belief in him convinced the Brazilian to head for the Premier League and close the door on Barcelona. At least for that chapter of his career.
A story that comes full circle
Fast forward to now, and the storyline has bent back towards Barcelona. After missing out on Julián Álvarez and with the market about to slam shut, the Catalan club turned again to a player they had once courted and lost.
This time there was no Olympic village, no tug-of-war with Pep, no Neymar sales pitch needed. Just a cut-price fee of 10 million euros and a forward who already knows European football inside out.
For Gabriel Jesus, the choice he postponed in 2016 has finally arrived in 2026 in very different circumstances. For Barça, the question is simple: have they finally landed the right striker at the second attempt, or is this a gamble made under pressure that will define their season?
