Galatasaray's Bold Move for Bruno Fernandes: A €50m Offer
Galatasaray are attempting one of the boldest moves of the summer: a double-pronged assault to prise Bruno Fernandes away from Manchester United.
The Turkish champions, buoyed by another title and the financial muscle that comes with it, are preparing a package designed to test both United’s resolve and the player’s loyalty. According to reports from The Telegraph and journalist Ben Jacobs, Galatasaray are ready to put €50m (£42.8m) on the table for the United captain and hand him a four-year contract that would transform his earnings.
Galatasaray’s big swing
President Dursun Özbek is driving the push. Galatasaray are understood to be offering Fernandes a deal worth €21m (£18.3m) net per season, plus a €4m signing-on fee. Thanks to Turkey’s favourable tax regime, that proposal would effectively double his current take-home pay at Old Trafford.
For a 31-year-old who has just entered the final 12 months of his United contract, it is a heavyweight offer. His existing deal is worth about £200,000 per week, with United holding an option to extend it by a further year. A previous £57m release clause has now expired, but the lack of a fresh agreement has inevitably alerted Europe’s opportunists.
Galatasaray sense their moment. They know Saudi Pro League clubs, including Al-Hilal, have already tried and failed to tempt Fernandes with colossal wages. He turned down that approach last summer, choosing instead to stay at Old Trafford and chase major trophies in England and Europe. The Turks are gambling that a combination of Champions League football, a leading role in Istanbul and a life-changing contract might finally shift the dial.
United’s stance: captain untouchable
So far, there is no sign of that happening. The Telegraph, BBC Sport and Jacobs are all aligned on one key point: Manchester United have no intention of selling Bruno Fernandes this summer, regardless of the size of any bid.
Inside Old Trafford, Fernandes is viewed as central to Michael Carrick’s plans. United’s hierarchy still see him as the heartbeat of the side and a player around whom they want to keep building. Letting their captain leave now, with the club trying to re-establish itself among the Premier League’s elite and push deeper into the Champions League, is not on the agenda.
BBC Sport also report that Fernandes’ own preference is clear. His priority is to remain at United. He is said to be fiercely loyal to the club, even in the face of offers that would significantly increase his salary.
Loyalty now, options later
The financial reality is impossible to ignore. Fernandes could, at some point, choose a move to a more lucrative league to maximise his final years at the top and secure his family’s future. Saudi Arabia remains an obvious route. Turkey, with Galatasaray’s tax advantages and status as domestic heavyweights, is now making its case.
For the moment, though, Fernandes believes he still has more to give in the Premier League and the Champions League. He wants to compete at the highest level in Europe before thinking about one last big payday elsewhere.
TEAMtalk reported last week that United will keep Fernandes this summer despite growing interest from abroad. Galatasaray’s ambitious play only underlines how coveted he remains.
The money on offer in Istanbul is huge. The answer from Manchester, and from the player, is not. For now, the United captain stays put – but with his contract running down, how long can that position hold?
