Gavi's Journey: From Young Talent to Key Player at Barcelona

Gavi accepts the fight. The starting XI is no longer his by default at Barcelona, yet inside the club there is no doubt about how Hansi Flick sees him: a key piece, trusted, folded into the German’s plans even when his name is not on the first teamsheet.

The Andalusian midfielder has responded in the only way he knows – by grinding. Training, competing, chasing every minute in a squad stacked with talent. The comfort of his teenage breakthrough has gone. The battle has sharpened.

From carefree kid to carrying the weight

Speaking to Men’s Health, the 22-year-old opened up about how the landscape around him has changed since he first burst into the Barça side.

“Now there is much greater pressure than there was when I was 17 years old. At that time I did not realise where I was. The younger I was, the more I enjoyed football,” he admitted.

Back then, he played as if nothing could touch him. Now he understands exactly where he is, what is at stake, and how heavy the shirt can feel. The joy is still there, but it has been joined by responsibility.

That shift has not come out of nowhere. It has been forged in setbacks.

Lessons from the sidelines

For a player who lives off intensity, the long spells out injured cut deep. Gavi has already endured more time in the treatment room than many veterans. Those months changed him.

“Perhaps I was not patient in the past, but now I am more patient,” he said. “When I was injured, I had to complete the stages and set goals. It was also useful for me to learn other things beyond football. Now I can say that I take care of myself much better than I did when I started my professional career.”

The injury forced him to slow down, to break recovery into small targets, to look beyond the next matchday. It also dragged him out of the bubble. Away from the pitch, he discovered how to look after his body and his life with a seriousness that did not exist when he first arrived.

The knee that changed everything

One area remains non-negotiable: that damaged knee. It cost him almost an entire season. He refuses to let it define him, but he knows it can never be ignored.

“My knee must always be strong, whether I play or not,” he explained. “I cannot be lax because the injury could happen at any moment.”

Every session, every gym routine, every day off revolves around that reality. Complacency is the enemy. The work does not stop when he is on the bench.

Through that ordeal, one support system never wavered.

“I isolated myself with my family, and that helped me a lot,” he said. In the quiet moments, away from the noise of the Camp Nou and the headlines, they carried him.

Backing Lamine Yamal

Gavi is now old enough, and experienced enough, to look at the next generation coming through and recognise something special. One name stands out: Lamine Yamal.

“This player is very skilful on the pitch, but he surprises you even more in training,” Gavi revealed. “I only hope he keeps developing. He is aware of his abilities. He can be among the best of all time.”

That is not a throwaway line. It is a seasoned young professional talking about a teenager he sees every day, not just in the spotlight but in the grind of training.

“I see him as mentally strong, and that is the most important thing in the end,” he added. “He knows what he wants, and he still has a long football future ahead of him. He must continue in this way every day, because the present is the most important thing, and everyone will be watching him closely every day.”

Gavi speaks like someone who already knows what it means to live under that microscope. He is no longer the carefree kid who did not realise where he was. He is the player who has been to the edge, fought his way back, and now stares down a new kind of pressure: to win his place again, protect his body, and help shepherd a phenomenon like Lamine Yamal into the era that could define Barcelona’s future.
