Gavin Bazunu Joins Bolton Wanderers for Fresh Start

Gavin Bazunu has drawn a line under his Southampton chapter and dropped into a new one at Bolton Wanderers, signing a three-year deal with the Championship club.

For the 24-year-old Republic of Ireland international, it feels like a reset. Once signed by Southampton from Manchester City in 2022 as a long-term solution in goal, he found himself sliding down the pecking order at St Mary’s despite making 19 Championship appearances last season.

Game time became patchy. Rhythm disappeared. By the second half of the 2025-26 campaign, he was out on loan at Stoke City, a spell disrupted by injury and never allowed to fully catch fire. Before that, Southampton had already sent him to Standard Liege in Belgium’s top flight, another sign that his future on the south coast was drifting rather than defined.

So he has chosen Bolton, and chosen it decisively.

Bazunu, capped 22 times by Ireland, made it clear that minutes on the pitch drove the move, which has gone through for an undisclosed fee.

"It's obviously a club with massive history. I see it as a place where I can come and progress my personal career, while helping the team with their ambitions of getting back to where they belong," he told Wanderers TV, framing Bolton as both a platform and a project.

His message was as much to himself as to the supporters.

"I want to get back to being in a position where I’m playing week in, week out and enjoying my football again. My big aim and ambition here is to play as many games as I can and show my levels.

"I’m excited to be here and excited for what’s to come. I’m sure all the other new signings will have said the same thing, but we’re excited to get going, show our qualities and show where this team belongs."

At international level, Bazunu’s last appearance for Ireland came in March 2024 in a friendly against Switzerland, while his most recent call-up under Heimir Hallgrimsson was in November of the same year. Regular football at Bolton will not just be about club ambition; it will be about forcing his way back into that green shirt.

A goalkeeper who once looked set as Ireland’s long-term No. 1 now stands at a crossroads. Bolton offers him something simple and priceless: a goal to defend every week, and a stage to prove he still belongs at the highest level.
