Matteo Guendouzi Receives Four-Match Suspension for Post-Match Brawl

Fenerbahce midfielder Matteo Guendouzi has been hit with a four-match European suspension – half of it suspended – and a €50,000 (£43,000) fine for his role in the ugly post-match brawl that followed the club’s Champions League play-off victory at Lyon.

Uefa announced that two of Guendouzi’s four games are suspended, with the sanction hanging over him for a one-year probationary period. The Frenchman was found guilty of “insulting others present at the match, provoking spectators and violating the basic rules of decent conduct” after tempers flared at full-time.

The flashpoints came after Fenerbahce sealed a 3-2 aggregate win to reach the league stage, a result that sparked chaotic scenes around the pitch and in the technical areas.

Mason Greenwood, Fenerbahce’s English striker, has also been punished. He received a one-match suspended ban, also subject to a one-year probation, and a €30,000 (£26,000) fine for “violating the basic rules of decent conduct”. Greenwood joined the Istanbul side in the summer from Marseille, a direct rival of Lyon, adding another layer of tension to an already charged tie.

The heaviest touchline sanction fell on Lyon goalkeeping coach Antonio Ferreira. Uefa issued him with a five-match ban, with two of those matches suspended, citing “serious assault” during the post-match clashes.

Both clubs did not escape collective responsibility. Uefa fined Lyon and Fenerbahce €50,000 each after ruling that their teams had “violated the general and basic rules of conduct”.

The verdict leaves players and staff across both camps walking a disciplinary tightrope as the European campaign moves on.
