Hafiz Gariba’s Journey to Barcelona's First Team Stalls
Barcelona’s defensive cupboard looks bare, but Hafiz Gariba will not be the one filling it just yet.
Despite the club’s shortage of centre-backs ahead of a gruelling 2026/27 season, Hansi Flick does not currently see the highly rated youth defender as a realistic option for the senior squad, Barça Universal has learned from information provided by Adrian Sanchez.
It is a harsh reality check for one of La Masia’s most eye-catching young centre-backs.
A prospect that turned heads quickly
Gariba has been on an upward curve ever since he first made noise at Escuela Marcet. His displays there pushed him onto the radar of several top Spanish clubs, and Barcelona moved decisively, winning the race for his signature and tying him down on a long-term project.
In February 2025, the defender signed a three-year contract with Barça, committing his future to the club until 2028. Inside the club, his progress since that deal has been a source of real optimism.
Coaches have been struck by his blend of physical power and defensive awareness. His imposing frame lets him eat up ground when chasing back towards his own goal, while his anticipation and reading of the game help him jump passing lanes and break up attacks before they develop.
Since arriving in Catalonia, Gariba has become a fixture for the Juvenil A side. There, he has continued to impress with exactly the traits modern centre-backs are built on: recovery pace, strength in duels, and an instinct for interceptions.
Everything about his trajectory pointed upwards.
A missed pre-season window
This summer looked like it might be the moment the door creaked open.
Inside the club, there was genuine hope that Gariba would get a taste of first-team work during pre-season for 2026/27. His name was on the table for inclusion in senior training, and with Barcelona’s centre-back options thin, the timing felt perfect.
Then came a setback that had nothing to do with form.
A fever ruled him out and kept him sidelined for the pre-season clash with CE Europa. While the first team went through their paces, Gariba watched his best immediate chance of a breakthrough disappear.
As injuries, rotation needs and fixture congestion loomed, his name inevitably resurfaced in conversations as a possible internal solution. Yet that theoretical pathway has not translated into a real opening under Flick. Not now.
Flick’s hierarchy at the back is set
For the moment, the picture in central defence is clear in the coach’s mind.
Pau Cubarsi, Andreas Christensen and Gerard Martin make up the recognised centre-back group. Jules Kounde can also shift inside, but Flick is using the Frenchman primarily at full-back, where his athleticism and versatility serve another purpose.
On paper, that leaves Barcelona light in the heart of defence for a season that will demand depth, rotation and resilience. In that context, Gariba’s situation stands out: a young defender progressing fast, drawing positive internal reviews, but still not deemed ready to carry the weight of senior responsibility.
From the information available, Flick is not prepared to rely on him at first-team level just yet.
For Gariba, the message is blunt but clear: the club believes in his future, his contract reflects it, his coaches praise his development — but the final step will have to wait.
