Dietmar Hamann on Erling Haaland’s Future: Could Barcelona or Real Madrid Lure Him Away?

Dietmar Hamann recently shared with GOAL that there is “always a chance” Erling Haaland might leave Manchester City if Barcelona or Real Madrid come knocking. While no formal offers have arrived yet, Haaland remains under contract until 2034, but the idea of a fresh start elsewhere could arise in time.

Haaland’s Record-Breaking Success at City

Joining City in summer 2022, following in his father Alf Inge’s footsteps, Haaland was one of the most sought-after players globally. Pep Guardiola managed to secure him for £51 million ($69m), a fee that looks like a steal considering the era of nine-figure transfers. Haaland celebrated an extraordinary debut season with 52 goals and a historic Treble — Premier League, FA Cup, and Champions League titles.

Since then, he has shattered numerous records, including hitting 100 top-flight English goals at a remarkable speed. Despite agreeing on long-term terms, nothing guarantees that Haaland will stay for the full duration of his deal.

Could Spain Call in 2027?

Rumors about interest from Spanish giants continue, especially with Haaland turning 27 next summer after five seasons in Manchester. The possibility of embracing new challenges at Camp Nou or the Santiago Bernabeu remains open.

Hamann told GOAL, “He’s won it all, hasn’t he? The Champions League, the Premier League. He’s signed a very long contract, hasn’t he? It’s not up to him whether he leaves or can leave, but it’s natural to think about a change after winning everything and spending some time at a club.”
“He’s even born in England because his father played in the Premier League. I think there might be a time when Barcelona or Madrid come calling. There’s always a chance, but if City says no, given his contract and value, it could be difficult.”

Leadership Role at Manchester City

At present, Haaland is focused on helping City chase more titles under new manager Enzo Maresca. With key figures like Bernardo Silva, Rodri, Kevin De Bruyne, and Ilkay Gundogan having left, leadership roles are opening up.

Hamann commented, “When powerful characters leave the dressing room, others must step up. Ruben Dias remains a leader, and goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma brings experience despite his youth. These players are crucial.”
“Young talents like Elliot Anderson and Ayyoub Bouaddi show promise but need guidance. Bouaddi is still adapting to the league. The midfield is where games are won or lost, so Dias and Donnarumma are vital.”
“As a keeper, Donnarumma’s influence is limited, so Haaland probably has to take on a different responsibility now. Previously, other players carried much of the leadership, but that will change.”

New Addition: Enzo Fernandez Joins City

City strengthened their squad on transfer deadline day by signing Argentine World Cup winner Enzo Fernandez from Chelsea for £125 million ($169m). This makes him one of British football’s joint-most expensive players. Fernandez, known for his combative style and leadership at Chelsea, is expected to be a driving force in City's midfield.

Currently topping the Premier League after two wins this season, City will next face Frank Lampard’s Coventry side on Saturday.
