Hansi Flick's Bold Lineup for Barcelona's Season Opener

Hansi Flick has wasted no time putting his stamp on Barcelona.

For the season opener against Elche CF, the new head coach has named a bold, youthful XI that underlines just how much this Barça side is about to change.

Flick makes big calls at full-back

The first shock came even before the lineup dropped, with Alejandro Balde, Marc Casado and Hector Fort all omitted from the initial squad list. Flick has doubled down on that statement with his team sheet.

Xavi Espart, talked up in the build-up, goes straight into the side and straight into the spotlight. The youngster starts at left-back, pushing new arrival Joao Cancelo to the bench for the first game of the campaign.

On the opposite flank, Eric Garcia is deployed at right-back, while Andreas Christensen and Gerard Martin form the central defensive pairing. It’s a back line that blends experience with fresh faces, and it leaves some big names watching on.

Midfield balance on Bernal’s shoulders

In midfield, Marc Bernal gets a major vote of confidence. He anchors the centre of the pitch and is tasked with dictating the tempo in front of that reshaped defence.

Either side of him, Gavi and Fermin Lopez bring aggression and attacking intent. The setup points to a proactive Barça, with Bernal asked to hold things together while his partners surge forward and look to connect with the front line.

Adeyemi as a false nine, Yamal from the start

Up front, Flick has rolled out another headline decision. New signing Karim Adeyemi starts as a false nine, rather than as a traditional winger, giving Barcelona a mobile, pressing focal point who can drop between the lines.

Raphinha and Lamine Yamal flank him, offering pace, width and one-on-one threat. For Yamal in particular, it is another significant show of trust on opening night, with Flick leaning into his talent rather than easing him in.

Firepower on the bench

If the starting XI is daring, the bench is stacked.

Anthony Gordon, another fresh arrival, waits for his chance and looks a strong candidate to feature in the second half. Cancelo, Pedri and Jules Kounde are also among the substitutes, giving Flick serious options to change the rhythm or tighten control after the break.

One more name lingers in the background: Hamza Abdelkarim. The forward has generated plenty of buzz and offers a more orthodox number nine profile if Flick wants to alter the shape later on.

New coach. New signings. Youngsters trusted from the first whistle. Barcelona’s season doesn’t just start tonight against Elche CF — it takes on an entirely new identity.
