Harry Kane Leads England's Charge for 2026 Ballon d'Or
Harry Kane will lead a powerful English charge for the 2026 Men’s Ballon d’Or after being named on a star‑studded 30-man shortlist unveiled on Tuesday.
The Bayern Munich striker, already the bookmakers’ clear favourite, heads into the October 26 ceremony in London on the back of a staggering season: 73 goals in 65 games for club and country, another Bundesliga title, and the captaincy of an England side that claimed bronze at the World Cup. If he finishes the job at the London Palladium, he would become the first Englishman to lift the trophy since Michael Owen in 2001.
He is not alone in flying the flag. Jude Bellingham and Declan Rice also make the cut, underlining the strength of England’s current core. Rice is one of several Premier League names on the list, joined by Bruno Fernandes, Gabriel, Erling Haaland and William Saliba as the English top flight again muscles its way to the heart of the conversation.
The competition, though, is fierce. Holder Ousmane Dembele returns to defend his crown, with Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, Lamine Yamal, Rodri and Kylian Mbappe all among Kane’s leading rivals. The ceremony itself will carry a sense of history. This is the 70th anniversary of the Ballon d’Or, created by France Football and co-organised with UEFA since 2024. For the first time, the gala leaves Paris for London, a deliberate nod to the inaugural winner, England and Blackpool great Stanley Matthews.
Young stars and coaching heavyweights
Lamine Yamal’s extraordinary rise continues as he headlines the Men’s Young Talent of the Year shortlist. The teenage phenomenon is joined by Bournemouth forward Junior Kroupi, with Manchester City’s Ayyoub Bouaddi and Aston Villa’s recent recruit Johan Manzambi also nominated. On the women’s side, Chelsea’s Veerle Buurman is recognised with a place on the young talent list.
On the touchline, Arsenal’s Mikel Arteta and Aston Villa’s Unai Emery are both contenders for Men’s Coach of the Year. They go up against Spain boss Luis De La Fuente, Vincent Kompany and Luis Enrique in a category that reflects both domestic and international success. Arteta’s Arsenal receive further recognition with a nomination for Men’s Club of the Year, a marker of the club’s resurgence under his watch.
Between the posts, Cape Verde’s Vozinha is rewarded for his standout World Cup displays with a place on the Men’s Goalkeeper of the Year shortlist. He faces competition from Arsenal’s David Raya and Emiliano Martinez, now at Chelsea, in a battle that pits tournament heroics against the consistency of established European No 1s.
When the lights go up at the London Palladium on October 26, the night will celebrate seven decades of football’s most famous individual prize. The question is whether it will also mark the moment England finally ends a 25-year wait for one of its own to be crowned the best in the world.
