Harvey Elliott's Liverpool Exit: Valencia Move Progresses
Harvey Elliott’s Liverpool chapter is edging towards its final pages.
Less than a week after being left out of the matchday squad against Newcastle, the 23-year-old is moving closer to the exit door at Anfield, with Valencia pushing to take him to La Liga.
From bright prospect to forgotten option
Elliott returned to Liverpool in the summer after a bruising loan spell at Aston Villa, a stint that stalled the momentum of a career once fast-tracked towards the top. Instead of a fresh start on Merseyside, he has found himself slipping further from the picture.
The clearest sign came against Newcastle. Youngsters Lewis Koumas and James McConnell were chosen ahead of him, a brutal but honest reflection of where he now stands in the pecking order.
Andoni Iraola did not hide from that reality when asked about his selection choices before the Nottingham Forest game.
“With Harvey, with [Luke] Chambers, with some of the players that I decided – because I can only choose 20 – to leave out, it’s a matter of finding the balance on the bench,” he said.
“In Harvey’s case, he’s trying, he’s improving every week, but I still prefer other options.
“Probably I was in doubt with James McConnell in terms of getting into the squad, and I decided to put James in the squad.
“But it’s another new week, new chances for everyone, and they have to keep that mentality.”
The message was clear: Elliott is working, but others are now ahead of him.
Valencia move gathers pace
That reality has accelerated talks over a move away. Elliott has, according to widespread reports, agreed personal terms with Valencia after positive discussions. The only real question left is the format of the deal.
A loan has not been ruled out, but with just 12 months left on his Liverpool contract, a permanent transfer is understood to be the more likely outcome. Liverpool face a simple choice: cash in now or risk losing him for nothing next year.
Transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano reports that Valencia have already opened negotiations with Liverpool, seeking a club-to-club agreement to complete the move.
Squeezed out at Anfield
Elliott’s slide down the hierarchy has not happened in isolation. The arrival of Florian Wirtz last summer pushed him further from the central attacking roles he once hoped to make his own. Any remaining ambition to stake a claim out wide has been effectively shut down with Bradley Barcola on the way.
For a player once tipped as a long-term creative spark at Anfield, the pathway has narrowed to almost nothing.
Now Valencia offer a way out and a way back – out of a cul-de-sac at Liverpool, and back into a starring role. The next decision will define the trajectory of a career that, not long ago, looked set to explode on Merseyside.
