Harvey Elliott Set for Valencia Loan Move from Liverpool
Harvey Elliott is on the brink of swapping Anfield for Mestalla, with the Liverpool midfielder moving closer to a loan move to Valencia that could define the next phase of his career.
The 23-year-old spent Thursday locked in talks with the La Liga club, and transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano has reported that Elliott has agreed personal terms with Valencia. All that remains is for Liverpool and the Spanish side to finalise the details of a loan agreement.
For Elliott, once tipped as one of the brightest talents of his generation, the move comes after a bruising spell of uncertainty on Merseyside. A former Fulham academy standout and England youth international, he has slipped to the fringes of the first-team picture in the opening weeks of the new campaign.
Napoli and Lazio had both registered interest, and a switch to Serie A was on the table. Valencia, though, have pushed hardest, and the lure of regular football in La Liga appears to have won the race.
Talks between Liverpool and Valencia are now at an advanced stage over a loan, with one major sub-plot: Elliott’s contract at Anfield runs out next summer. Any deal struck in the coming days will not just be about this season; it will go a long way to deciding whether he has a long-term future at the club he joined as a teenager.
The signs have not been encouraging. Elliott has been missing from recent Liverpool matchday squads, a clear indicator of where he currently stands. New manager Andoni Iraola has been open about the brutal competition for places and the balancing act required on his bench.
“With Harvey... I can only choose 20,” Iraola said when pressed on the omission. “Harvey is trying and improving every week but I still prefer other options, about the balance on the bench. That's why James McConnell was in the squad, but it's now another new week and new chances for everyone. They have to keep that mentality.”
The message sounded supportive. The reality has been harsher. The arrival of Florian Wirtz and the continued prominence of Dominik Szoboszlai have effectively blocked Elliott’s route to the starting XI in his favoured No 10 role. When Liverpool need creativity between the lines, others are ahead of him.
This latest development comes off the back of a deeply frustrating 2025/26 campaign. Sent on loan to Aston Villa in search of minutes, Elliott instead found himself largely sidelined. Under Unai Emery he made only four appearances, with reports suggesting Villa were wary of triggering a £35m obligation-to-buy clause tied to his game time.
The move suited nobody. Elliott returned to Merseyside with little rhythm and even fewer answers. He responded with a positive pre-season, including an assist in a friendly against Sunderland, but it was not enough to dislodge Wirtz or change the hierarchy in Iraola’s mind.
So the focus shifts to Spain. Valencia, struggling for form in the early stages of the La Liga season, can offer something Elliott has been starved of: consistent minutes. For a player whose rise once seemed unstoppable — crowned Player of the Tournament at the 2025 U-21 European Championship — this is a chance to restart a career that has stalled.
Liverpool, for their part, are understood to be open to the move. They recognise the need for Elliott to play senior football, particularly after he was left out of the squad for the Premier League opener at Newcastle. A season in La Liga could either restore his value to Liverpool or pave the way for a clean break next summer.
For now, the deal edges closer. If the final details fall into place, Elliott will walk out at Mestalla with his Anfield future hanging in the balance and a simple task in front of him: prove he’s too good to be a fringe player anywhere.
