Sergej Jakirovic did not disguise the scale of his summer overhaul. Eighteen new signings arrived, and the head coach called the challenge of welding them together a “very big problem.”
So far, the numbers argue otherwise.
Hull sit third in the table on seven points. They beat Manchester United and Coventry, with a goalless draw against Aston Villa wedged in between. The performances have not been flawless, but the defensive organisation has been ruthless.

Midfield battle and McBurnie’s milestone
With Zambrano unavailable, Matt Crooks, Lucas Gourna-Douath, Christos Mouzakitis and Jens Hjerto-Dahl will scrap for a starting role next to Regan Slater in central midfield. Whoever gets the nod will need to cover ground and protect that vaunted back line against Chelsea’s movement between the lines.
Up front, Oli McBurnie is chasing a different kind of landmark. The striker has yet to score this season, but his work rate has been ferocious; he leads the division for high-intensity pressures. His pressing sets the tone for Hull’s defensive work from the front and could be crucial in unsettling Chelsea’s attempts to build from the back.
If selected, McBurnie will make his 100th Premier League appearance – a milestone that would feel fitting on a day when Hull are trying to prove they belong at this level.
