Hull City vs Manchester United: Early Season Kick-off Insights
The Premier League’s first 12.30pm BST kick-off of the campaign drops in at the MKM Stadium, where newly promoted Hull City test themselves against Manchester United – and both managers have already shown their hand.
Hull stick to what got them here
Hull arrive on opening day with a familiar feel. Eight of Sergej Jakirovic’s starting XI came up with the club from the Championship, a clear show of faith in the group that earned promotion.
That continuity sits alongside a carefully measured splash of something new. The Tigers might have pushed into double figures with their summer signings, but only three start competitively for the first time today: goalkeeper Konstantinos Tzolakis, defender Nobel Mendy and Elliot Stroud.
Mendy replaces fellow new arrival Jens Hjerto-Dahl in the only change from Hull’s final pre-season friendly, underlining how settled this side already looks. His inclusion, and the way the team is set out on paper, strongly points to Jakirovic rolling with a wing-back system – a shape he dipped into at times during the 2025/26 Championship campaign but kept under wraps in pre-season.
In midfield, budget FPL favourites get the nod. The £4.5m pair Charlie Slater and Matt Crooks start in the engine room, tasked with doing the hard yards against United’s technicians.
At the back, value is everywhere for fantasy managers. Five £4.0m defenders are involved in the matchday squad, including Mendy, who steps straight into the spotlight on debut.

On the opposite touchline, Manchester United arrive with a headline omission. Amad Diallo does not make the squad, with BBC reporter Simon Stone describing his issue as a “niggle”.
His absence forces a reshuffle in the attacking line. Compared with United’s final friendly of the summer, there is just one change: Bryan Mbeumo, who started that defeat to AC Milan on the bench, comes into the XI in Amad’s place.
That decision has a knock-on effect. With Amad missing, Matheus Cunha keeps his spot up front, given another chance to lead the line from the start.
There is more intrigue on the bench. Benjamin Sesko and Karl Darlow are named among the substitutes despite missing the entirety of United’s pre-season programme, hinting that their return to full involvement is accelerating.
And then there is Marcus Rashford. The forward is also on the bench, included in a competitive United squad for the first time since December 2024. His presence alone changes the mood around the visitors’ dugout.
