Ibrahima Konate Set for Real Madrid Move After Liverpool Departure

Trent Alexander-Arnold knows exactly what Real Madrid might be getting in Ibrahima Konate. He said it two years ago, under the lights of a Champions League final: “Wow. Outstanding… I’m lost for words.”

Back then, they were Liverpool’s future. Now, their story looks set to be rewritten in white.

From Anfield bond to Bernabéu reunion

Konate is poised to join Real Madrid on a free transfer once his Liverpool contract expires, ending a five-year spell on Merseyside that promised longevity but has instead delivered a sharp, painful twist for the Reds.

He arrived in 2021 from RB Leipzig for £36m, a powerful, athletic centre-back stepping into a dressing room ruled by Virgil van Dijk and driven by Jürgen Klopp. Within months, he had something else: a tight bond with Alexander-Arnold.

“We’ve created a bond and he’s an amazing lad,” the England defender said after that 2022 Champions League final defeat to Real. Liverpool lost 1-0 in Paris, but Konate walked off the pitch with his reputation enhanced. “The performance he put in yesterday, I’m lost for words. Words can’t do it justice. The potential he has is ridiculous. The sky is the limit.”

That wasn’t a throwaway line in the glow of a big night. A year earlier, barely after Konate had unpacked his bags, Alexander-Arnold had already nailed his first impression.

“He’s a very athletic boy,” he said, highlighting the modern profile of the elite centre-back: fast, strong, aggressive. “He ticks all those boxes. He’s still young. But he’s got huge potential.

“I think obviously learning and playing next to Virgil [van Dijk], he’s one of those players you instantly pick up things from – just his positioning and the way he commands the defence.”

Konate was being groomed as the next pillar of Liverpool’s back line. Now, that development arc looks set to continue in Madrid instead.

Mutual respect across borders

The admiration between the pair has never run one way. On the eve of England’s World Cup quarter-final against France in 2022, Konate spoke openly about his relationship with Alexander-Arnold.

“Trent Alexander-Arnold sent me a message saying, ‘See you on Saturday, my brother’ because I’m very close to him,” the Frenchman revealed in a press conference, folding a personal subplot into one of international football’s oldest rivalries.

“It’s a rivalry that’s been around since the dawn of time,” he said of England versus France. Yet behind the flags and the anthems, there was that message from a friend, a reminder of the bond forged at Anfield.

It is that same bond that now looks likely to be renewed at club level in Spain.

Liverpool lose another pillar

Konate’s departure will sting at Liverpool. The club had been in talks over a contract extension and, as recently as April, the defender himself said he was “close” to signing new terms and suggested he wanted to stay. The expectation around Anfield was that a deal would eventually be done.

It never was.

Instead, Liverpool watch another key defender walk away for nothing, a year after Alexander-Arnold’s own move to Real Madrid. Los Blancos paid a modest £10m to take the full-back with just weeks left on his contract. Now they stand to land Konate without a fee at all.

For a club that once built its modern era on smart recruitment and ruthless contract timing, it is a jarring pattern. Alexander-Arnold and Konate were supposed to be part of the next cycle. Real Madrid, as so often, have sensed opportunity and moved decisively.

Konate leaves with a respectable haul: a Premier League title, an FA Cup and two League Cups. Trophies, yes, but also a lingering sense of what might have been had those contract talks gone differently.

From “sky is the limit” to Madrid’s skyline

Real Madrid are now widely viewed as his most likely destination, a move that would drop him straight into a dressing room already familiar with his qualities and character. Alexander-Arnold knows the defender who might soon line up behind him. He has seen the raw tools, the athleticism, the hunger, and called it early.

“The potential he has is ridiculous. The sky is the limit,” he said.

Soon enough, the sky above the Bernabéu may be where Konate is judged. The question now is simple: how many more of Liverpool’s supposed cornerstones will be allowed to chase their ceiling somewhere else?
