Inter Milan Secures Federico Dimarco After Barcelona Interest
Inter Milan have slammed the door on Barcelona’s late-window advances for Federico Dimarco and are now racing to tie the full-back to a long-term deal running to 2030.
The Catalan club’s attempt to prise him away in the final days of the transfer window jolted the Italian champions into action. Talks even went as far as exploring a sensational left-back swap: Dimarco to Barcelona, Alejandro Balde to Inter. Discussions never progressed into an agreement, but the alarm at San Siro was loud enough.
According to La Gazzetta dello Sport, Inter have responded by pushing ahead with a contract extension that would add three more years to Dimarco’s current deal. The 28-year-old is under contract until 2027, with an option for a further season, yet the club had so far stopped short of triggering it.
That hesitation surprised the player. Dimarco admitted recently he had expected a call after his standout campaign last year, saying he thought the club would sit down with him on the back of his performances.
Turning Point
The turning point came in Madrid.
On the eve of Inter’s Champions League clash with Real, new sporting director Dario Baccin met Arturo Canales, Dimarco’s agent, in the Spanish capital. That summit, reported in Italy, has accelerated the process and laid the foundations for a new agreement.
Negotiations are said to be built around Dimarco’s current net salary of 4 million euros. It is a significant wage, but one Inter view as in line with his status among the leading left-backs in world football.
Barcelona, though, are not walking away from the story. They are closely monitoring how the talks develop. Hansi Flick has only one recognised left-back in his squad, Balde, and the youngster is not currently central to the coach’s plans.
Dimarco’s profile fits what Barcelona are missing: a ready-made, experienced solution on the flank, technically polished and at a mature stage of his career.
Inter’s task is clear. If they want their homegrown left-back to remain a pillar of Simone Inzaghi’s side well into the next decade, they now have to turn urgency into signatures before Barcelona test their resolve again.
