Help, though, has arrived in the form of Bradley Barcola. The French winger, signed from Paris Saint-Germain for £123m on the penultimate day of the transfer window, offers raw pace, one‑v‑one threat and a statement of intent. He has not played a competitive minute since the World Cup and missed pre-season minutes, but he has trained fully with his new teammates this week.
“I see him in a good place,” Iraola said, while stressing the lack of match time and the decision still to be made over his involvement. The answer is on the teamsheet: Barcola starts on the bench, waiting for his first taste of English football.
The Liverpool XI at Portman Road carries a familiar spine but a slightly new look around it: Alisson; Jacquet, Araujo, Van Dijk, Kerkez; Mac Allister, Szoboszlai; Munoz, Wirtz, Gakpo; Isak.
Virgil van Dijk anchors a back line featuring young defender Jacquet and the energetic Milos Kerkez. Alexis Mac Allister and Dominik Szoboszlai form the midfield base, with Florian Wirtz handed the keys between the lines. Cody Gakpo supports Alexander Isak up front, while Munoz offers width on the right.
Several notable absentees underline the balancing act Iraola faces. Hugo Ekitike remains out with an Achilles problem. Defenders Giovanni Leoni and Conor Bradley miss out with knee injuries. Joe Gomez is sidelined by a muscle issue and Federico Chiesa is nursing a minor back complaint. The squad is strong, but not complete.
So Liverpool chase a first win of the season with a reshaped defence, a creative midfield and a blockbuster new winger waiting in reserve.
Ipswich embrace the stage
Across the tunnel, Ipswich are treating this as a showcase, not a free hit.
Back in the Premier League and already off the mark, Gary O’Neil’s side opened with a 2-1 victory over Sunderland, a result that immediately eased any early-season nerves. Then came Old Trafford. Ipswich led Manchester United before being dragged into a wild contest that ended in a 5-2 defeat.
The scoreline hurt, but the performance – especially the attacking threat from Julio Enciso and Abdul Fatawu – hinted that Ipswich will not simply sit back and survive this season. They will swing.
They start tonight with: Scherpen; O’Shea, Diop, Greaves, Davis; Palacios, Lukic; Fatawu, Encisco, Maeda; Emersonn.
There are issues, though. Jaden Philogene-Bidace misses out with an ankle injury. Azor Matusiwa is sidelined by a muscle problem, Jack Taylor has a knee issue and Florentino Luis is a doubt. Up front, Emersonn has been carrying a knee concern but is named in the XI.
Even so, the front four of Fatawu, Enciso, Daizen Maeda and Emersonn promises speed, movement and ambition. At Portman Road, backed by a fanbase that has waited years for nights like this, that can be a problem for anyone.
The stakes at Portman Road
Strip away the early-season caveats and this is straightforward: Ipswich sit one point and one place above Liverpool after two games. The Tractor Boys have three points from six. Liverpool have two from two.
For Ipswich, another result here would reinforce the idea that they are more than plucky newcomers. They have already shown they can bloody noses; now they get the chance to do it to one of the league’s elite.
For Liverpool, the equation is harsher. A third straight draw or, worse, defeat, would leave Iraola’s first weeks under the microscope, no matter the caveats about injuries and adaptation. His pressing, high‑energy blueprint has not fully taken hold yet. The arrival of Barcola is meant to accelerate that process, to give Liverpool a new edge in transition and in one‑on‑one duels out wide.
Not tonight from the start, though. Not yet. For now, he is the weapon in reserve, the £123m option who could tilt a tight game under the lights.
