Jack Grealish's Potential Move to Sunderland: A Bold Loan Deal
Jack Grealish could be heading for a stunning move to Sunderland, with the Championship club in talks with Manchester City over a loan deal that would include an option to buy next year, according to David Ornstein of The Athletic.
The proposed structure is bold. Sunderland want City to agree a loan now, with the chance to make the transfer permanent when Grealish’s contract at the Etihad expires next summer. They are also pushing for the champions to continue paying a portion of his substantial wages, a crucial detail if the deal is to clear the financial hurdles.
Grealish pushed to the margins
Grealish’s departure has felt inevitable for some time. Enzo Maresca does not view the 28-year-old as a central piece of his plans and has barely used him this season, turning to him only in the Community Shield against Arsenal and in the home match against Bournemouth.
For a player signed in 2021 for around €117 million and once seen as a symbol of City’s attacking luxury, the slide has been stark. He has collected league titles and lifted the Champions League in 2023, amassing 159 appearances for City, but his influence has waned season by season. As his minutes shrank under Pep Guardiola, the former manager repeatedly stressed that the calls were tactical, not personal. The trend, though, never reversed.
A mixed loan at Everton
Last season’s loan to Everton was supposed to reboot his career. At times, it did. Grealish produced two goals and six assists in 22 matches, knitting together attacks and offering flashes of the creativity that made him a record signing. Then came the setback: a stress fracture in his foot in January, followed by a long rehabilitation that halted his momentum just as he looked settled.
Now, Sunderland are trying to position themselves as the club that gives him a full reset, and perhaps the keys to their project.
Sunderland’s ambitious rebuild
The interest in Grealish is not an isolated move. Sky Sports report that Sunderland are also pushing to sign Igor Paixão from Olympique Marseille and have already lodged a bid for the Brazilian. It underlines the scale of their ambition: proven Premier League quality in Grealish, emerging talent in Paixão.
For City, agreeing to a loan with an option to buy would draw a clear line under one of the most expensive transfers in their history. For Sunderland, it would be a statement that they are no longer content to lurk in the shadows of the top flight.
If they can land Grealish and Paixão in the same window, the question won’t be whether Sunderland are aiming high. It will be how quickly the rest of the league can catch up.
