Jake O'Brien Weighing Everton Exit as Premier League Clubs Show Interest
With the window ticking into its final days, Jake O'Brien has suddenly become one of the most intriguing Irish names on the market.
Twelve months ago, the Cork defender looked nailed on as part of Everton’s long-term plan. He was a mainstay at the Hill Dickinson Stadium last season, asked to plug a gap at right back while David Moyes kept faith with James Tarkowski and Jarrad Branthwaite in the middle.
He did the job. More than that, he did it well, emerging as Everton’s first-choice right back across the campaign.
But that’s the problem.
O'Brien still sees himself as a centre back, and with Tarkowski and Branthwaite locked in ahead of him, his pathway in his preferred role is clogged. As the new season settles, the 23‑year‑old is staring at another year of makeshift duty or reduced minutes.
So the conversation has shifted. Both Everton and O'Brien are now understood to be open to a move before the deadline, provided the pieces fall into place.
Premier League move most likely
Interest is not an issue. English and European clubs are tracking him, but the money involved makes a Premier League switch the most realistic outcome.
Football Insider report that Leeds United have entered the race, sensing an opportunity to add a versatile defender with top-flight experience. Crystal Palace, his former club, are also believed to be keen on bringing him back.
Sunderland have been credited with an interest as well, adding another option to the table if Everton do decide to cash in.
The key lies on Merseyside.
Everton will only seriously consider a sale if they can bring in a right back before the window shuts. Seamus Coleman’s departure in the summer has already thinned their options, and while Merlin Rohl started there in the win over Crystal Palace at the weekend, he is not a specialist in the position either.
Lose O'Brien without a replacement and Everton are light on both flanks and centrally. Behind Tarkowski and Branthwaite, only three other senior centre backs are currently in the squad.
That’s a risk in a long season.
Player wants minutes, Everton want cover
From O'Brien’s perspective, the picture is clear enough. He is not first choice at centre back. The club are actively looking to upgrade at right back. Consistent minutes at Everton over the coming months look far from guaranteed.
For a defender entering an important phase of his career, that matters.
A fee in the region of £20 million is thought to be enough to tempt Everton into a deal, but only once they have secured defensive reinforcements of their own.
Until then, everything hangs in the balance.
With the deadline fast approaching and multiple clubs hovering, the next few days will tell whether O'Brien remains a versatile stopgap at Everton or steps out to become a defensive cornerstone somewhere else.
