James Ward-Prowse Returns to Southampton After West Ham Stint

James Ward-Prowse is back where it all began. Southampton have re-signed their former captain from Championship rivals West Ham United in a deal worth just under £1m.

The 31-year-old midfielder has agreed a two-year contract at St Mary’s, sealing a homecoming that has felt inevitable ever since he first walked away.

Ward-Prowse left Saints in 2023 for West Ham and went on to make 75 appearances for the Hammers. During that spell he also took in two loan moves, first to Nottingham Forest and then to Burnley, where he played 14 times last season.

Now he returns to the club that shaped him.

“It feels a bit surreal,” Ward-Prowse said. “The last couple of days have been pretty intense, but I'm delighted to be back, and to be wearing the red and white again is truly special.

“It's the place I call home, obviously having come through the academy since I was eight.

“It was an incredible journey up until the point that I left, but home is a special place and I always had it in the back of my mind that it was somewhere that I wanted to be.

“I'm here today very excited and looking forward to the challenge ahead.”

Ward-Prowse joined Southampton’s academy as an eight-year-old and climbed every rung of the ladder before breaking into the first team and making 410 senior appearances. He captained the side, became their set-piece specialist and, for many, the modern face of the club.

His numbers underline that status. For Saints he scored 55 goals and provided 52 assists, with 17 of those goals coming from direct free-kicks in the Premier League – leaving him just one behind David Beckham’s top-flight record of 18.

His form on the south coast earned him international recognition too. Ward-Prowse has 11 England caps and two goals for his country.

Now he walks back into St Mary’s older, hardened by moves to West Ham, Forest and Burnley, but still carrying the same right foot that once lit up the stadium. The question is simple: how much more can he add to a club that already feels like his own?
