JJ Gabriel's Future at Manchester United in Jeopardy as Barcelona Pursues
JJ Gabriel’s Manchester United future is hanging by a thread – and Barcelona have moved to the front of the queue.
The 15-year-old forward, one of the most highly regarded prospects in United’s academy, is in Barcelona with his representatives for talks over a potential move to the Catalan giants. Interest in him is fierce: several Premier League clubs are watching closely, while Real Madrid, Paris Saint-Germain and Bayern Munich are also monitoring the situation.
United still hope to change his mind. Gabriel is under contract until the end of the season and the club’s hierarchy want him to stay at Old Trafford. But every development points the other way. The sense inside and outside the club is that he is edging towards the exit.
The turning point came last Thursday. After United’s 5-0 win over Sabah in the UEFA Youth League – a game in which Gabriel scored a hat-trick – the player and his camp submitted a formal request to be de-registered. Since that night, he has not trained with United.
His omission from England’s latest youth squads, announced on Friday, only added to the intrigue. Gabriel has represented England at U17 level but was not named in any of the age-group selections, and his absence has fuelled the feeling that a major move is being prepared behind the scenes.
There is a belief, based on an existing FIFA precedent, that Gabriel could leave United for a European club once he turns 16 on October 6, provided he secures a European passport through either of his parents. That route would still require FIFA approval, but it offers a potential pathway out of Old Trafford that his suitors are studying very closely.
United head coach Michael Carrick struck a cautious tone when asked about the situation on Friday. He stressed that the club must protect the teenager amid the growing noise around his future.
“I think he's a young boy, JJ, and I think it's important that we certainly don't play anything out here,” Carrick said. “I think the exposure and the scrutiny and everything, you've got to be careful and be sensible and think of him as much as anything, so the situation will work itself out, whatever way it's going to work itself out. Making sure he's okay is the important thing.”
While Carrick focused on welfare, others have zeroed in on the footballing blow United could suffer if Gabriel walks away.
Sky Sports pundit Paul Merson did not hold back on the scale of the potential loss.
“First of all, he's an unbelievable talent,” Merson said. “The problem now is with the lad and probably his agents and his family – I don't know him so I'm only thinking from the outside.
“When you're watching Max Dowman at Arsenal and Rio Ngumoha getting given a chance at Liverpool and doing very well, he's probably thinking, 'I should be playing at Man Utd now as well'.”

Barcelona are at the table. Others are waiting to pounce. The question now is not whether JJ Gabriel is coveted – it’s which badge he’ll be wearing when he turns 16.
