João Cancelo's Barcelona Debut Delayed by Registration Issues
João Cancelo cut an angry, impatient figure in the Camp Nou tunnel. Shirt on, boots ready, the Portuguese full-back was poised to step into the spotlight at Barcelona’s traditional Joan Gamper Trophy presentation on Wednesday night. Then, suddenly, he was gone.
As the rest of the Barça squad walked out one by one to greet the crowd, Cancelo turned on his heel and marched back towards the dressing room, leaving team-mates and staff looking around in confusion. Cameras had already picked him up wearing the No. 2 shirt. The stage seemed set. The debut never came.
The explanation arrived quickly from local media. According to Spanish journalist Victor Navarro, Barcelona had planned to unveil Cancelo with the rest of the squad but hit a late and very modern obstacle: registration.
The club could not present him because his registration had not been completed in time. On paper, at the moment of the ceremony, Cancelo was still an Al-Hilal player.
Reports in Spain confirmed that Al-Hilal and Cancelo had already reached an agreement to terminate his contract, which was due to run until the end of the season. The deal was simple but costly for the player: the Saudi Pro League side would release him, and in return Cancelo would waive the remaining money owed on his deal.
The agreement is in place. The final paperwork is not. That bureaucratic snag stopped Barcelona from officially putting him in front of the Camp Nou crowd, even as he stood just a few metres away in full kit.
While Cancelo waited in limbo, another new arrival soaked up the adulation. Rodri, signed from Manchester City earlier this week for £65 million on a four-year contract, drew the loudest roar of the night. Fresh from being named the best player at the 2026 World Cup, the Spanish midfielder walked out to a reception that underlined the scale of expectation around him in Catalonia.
For Cancelo, the scene was more familiar, and perhaps more frustrating. The 32-year-old is no stranger to the Camp Nou faithful after his loan spell during the second half of last season and the 2023–24 campaign. He knows the stadium, the chants, the pressure. He just had to watch it all from the shadows this time.
Inside the club offices, the work now is far less glamorous but absolutely decisive. Barcelona officials are racing to tie up the remaining details of Cancelo’s switch from Al-Hilal and complete his registration with La Liga.
Once the signatures land and the league gives the green light, Cancelo is set to be officially installed as Barcelona’s new No. 2 for the coming season. The shirt is ready. The player is ready. Only the paperwork stands between him and his second act in Spain.
