John Mahama Warns Ghana's Football League is Losing Young Talent Early

John Dramani Mahama has warned that Ghana’s domestic game is being stripped of its lifeblood far too early.

Meeting Nations FC, Medeama SC and Ampem Darkoa Ladies at Jubilee House on September 8, 2026, the Ghanaian President drew a direct line between the rapid sale of young stars and what he sees as a gradual weakening of the local championship, MyJoyOnline reported.

“We lose them as soon as they shine”

Mahama did not dress it up. Once a youngster shows a flash of real promise, he said, scouts swoop in and the player is gone from the Ghanaian league almost immediately. The conveyor belt keeps moving, but the quality at home thins out.

In his view, that constant drain is dragging down the standard of the domestic competition. The league develops the talent, then watches it leave before it can truly dominate, inspire, or raise the overall level.

For Mahama, the timing is the problem. Ghana, he argued, is losing its best young players too early. He urged clubs and authorities to find ways to keep emerging talents in the national league longer, to give them a proper runway to grow before they board the next flight out.

A national team pathway

The President did not stop at criticism. He floated a solution rooted in the Black Stars’ badge.

Mahama suggested that promising players should be given the chance to step into the national team setup earlier. That exposure, he believes, would hand them vital experience on the international stage while they are still based in Ghana.

His logic is simple: if youngsters can test themselves in international football while remaining in the local league, they will reach a more mature level before foreign or local scouts move them on. By the time they leave, they would not just be prospects—they would be finished products shaped by Ghanaian football.

The question now hangs over the domestic game: can Ghana find a way to keep its brightest talents at home long enough to strengthen the league, without blocking their path to the wider world?
