Julian Alvarez’s Atletico Madrid Future in Doubt as Barcelona Push
Julian Alvarez’s stand-off with Atletico Madrid deepened on Friday as the forward missed first-team training for the third consecutive day, casting a heavy shadow over his immediate future at the club.
The Argentine did report back to the training ground, according to reports in Spain, but not to rejoin Diego Simeone’s squad. Instead, he was scheduled to work alone, away from his team-mates, a clear sign of how strained the situation has become just days before the transfer window closes.
Barring a dramatic late twist, Alvarez is not expected to feature in Atletico’s LaLiga trip to Sevilla on Saturday. For a player of his stature, that absence speaks loudly.
Barcelona dream blocked, Arsenal opportunity opens
At the heart of the saga lies Alvarez’s determination to force through a move to Barcelona. He wants the Camp Nou. Atletico do not.
The club’s chief executive, Gil Marin, laid out the club’s stance in stark terms on Thursday, making it clear that while Atletico may eventually sanction a sale, it will not be to their direct rivals.
“Our intention and my personal dream is for him to stay with us, to remain at Atletico,” Gil Marin said. “To compete amongst the greats, you need great players, and Julian is one. If he believes that staying at Atletico is no longer feasible, we will look for an alternative, but it will never, ever be Barcelona.”
That line leaves the door ajar for others. Arsenal are already trying to walk through it.
The Premier League side continue to work quietly in the background on a deal and it is understood Atletico could be willing to sell to the Gunners for the right price. From the Spanish club’s point of view, Arsenal offer a solution that avoids strengthening a domestic rival while still cashing in on a major asset.
There is one problem. Alvarez has yet to give his approval. The green light from the player and his camp has not arrived, and Arsenal, like Atletico, are waiting for a clear signal from his representatives.
A player “very confused” as deadline looms
The clock is ticking. The window shuts on Tuesday night, leaving precious little time for clarity in a situation that appears to be clouding by the day.
Gil Marin painted a picture of a player caught in the middle of competing interests and mixed messages.
“Julian is really struggling,” he said. “There have been people who have set out to deceive and confuse him, and I’m very sorry about that.
“I know him and we’ve been working with him for some time. He’s a great professional and footballer, but he’s very confused and going through a very difficult time, both personally and professionally.”
So Alvarez trains alone, Barcelona remain his preferred destination, Arsenal hover with intent, and Atletico dig in against selling to a rival.
Something has to give before Tuesday night. The only question now is who.
