Julián Álvarez's Future: Barcelona Out, Arsenal in the Frame
Julián Álvarez can see only one exit door this summer – and it doesn’t lead to Barcelona.
Atlético Madrid have shut that path completely. Inside the Metropolitano, the message is blunt and public: they will not sell the Argentine to their La Liga rivals. According to "Marca", club sources describe the chances of a deal with Barcelona as “zero”. Not low. Not unlikely. Zero.
Álvarez, though, is still pushing from his side. He has now skipped training for a third consecutive day, clinging to his dream of pulling on the Barcelona shirt before the window closes. The stand-off is hardening.
Joan Laporta had vowed that Barcelona would keep going for Álvarez right up to deadline day. Instead, that stance only seems to have made Atlético dig their heels in. The board have issued a formal statement backing the decision not to negotiate with the Catalans, and the relationship between the two clubs has grown increasingly strained.
So the route to Camp Nou is blocked. Completely.
The door that remains ajar lies abroad. Atlético are prepared to sell Álvarez to a foreign club for 150 million euros, a figure that underlines both his importance and their determination not to strengthen a direct rival. His future in Madrid was already under scrutiny after a flashpoint against Villarreal, when sections of the home support jeered their own star and he walked straight off to the dressing room alone. That night felt like a crack in the bond between player and fans. It may yet prove the breaking point.
Into that gap step Arsenal.
The Premier League club are tracking the situation closely and are viewed as the most realistic destination if Álvarez does leave. Arsenal have made their interest clear and the player is attracted by their sporting project, the prospect of leading the line in a team built to challenge on multiple fronts.
But the complications are not all tactical or financial. Some are bureaucratic, and very personal.
Álvarez’s family live with him in Spain. Any move to London would mean uprooting them again, and post-Brexit immigration rules in the United Kingdom make that process more complex than during his previous spell in England. Several of his relatives saw their residency permits expire after that earlier stay, creating fresh paperwork and potential delays now.
His wife’s situation offers a little more clarity. As journalist Verónica Brunati has outlined, she can obtain residency as the dependent partner of a holder of a work visa, which would allow her to live legally in the UK if Álvarez signs for a British club. It is a key detail, and one Arsenal believe they can build on.
Inside the Emirates, there is confidence they can manage the visa process for the entire family if the player gives the green light. For the moment, though, that remains a plan rather than a trigger pulled. Arsenal have yet to submit a decisive, formal offer to Atlético, even if they are convinced an agreement is possible before the window closes on 1 September.
Five days remain. Barcelona are out of the race by decree, Atlético are holding firm on their price, and Arsenal hover with intent.
Now the question is simple: does Julián Álvarez force the only door still open, or stay where the welcome has already started to fade?
