Julian Alvarez Faces Hostility at Metropolitano

Julian Alvarez walked back into the Metropolitano and straight into a storm.

The Atletico Madrid forward, pushing hard for a move away this summer, was met with a wall of hostility from his own supporters during Sunday’s 2-2 draw with Villarreal – a raw, public snapshot of a relationship rapidly unravelling.

Linked heavily with Premier League champions Arsenal and with Barcelona, the Argentinian has made clear he wants out of the Spanish capital. Atletico, for now, are standing firm: not for sale. The stand-off framed the entire afternoon.

All week, attention had been fixed on one detail: would Alvarez feature in Atletico’s first home game of the season? His name on the bench answered that, but it did nothing to cool the tension.

The first boos came early. As Alvarez warmed up on the touchline, sections of the home crowd let him know exactly what they thought. When he finally entered the pitch in the 66th minute, the noise rose from disapproval to outright fury, whistles and jeers echoing around the stadium.

If this was supposed to be a step towards reconciliation, it did not look like one.

Alvarez came on with the game finely poised. Marc Pubill had put Atletico ahead, only for Gerard Moreno to level from the penalty spot just before the hour. The momentum had turned, and Diego Simeone turned to his unsettled forward.

Villarreal kept coming. Another penalty, this time converted by Georges Mikautadze, flipped the match on its head and left the visitors on course for all three points.

Atletico needed a rescue act, and it came from a different Argentinian. Giuliano Simeone struck five minutes from time to salvage a draw and briefly lift the mood inside the ground.

For Alvarez, there was no such softening.

At full-time, as his team-mates walked towards the stands to applaud the supporters, he broke away, heading straight down the tunnel to a fresh cascade of jeers. No lap of appreciation, no attempt at a gesture. Just a brisk exit that underlined the fracture between player and fans.

The club insist he is going nowhere. The player wants out. The supporters have made their feelings clear. With the transfer window still open, the next time Alvarez steps onto that pitch, will it be as an Atletico player at all?
