Julian Alvarez Transfer Saga Stalls as Arsenal Faces Rebuff
The market has circled Julian Alvarez all summer, but the striker’s future remains exactly where it started: in Madrid, under Diego Simeone’s watch.
Arsenal, according to reports, have emerged as the only realistic Premier League destination for the Atletico Madrid forward in this window. On paper, it fits. A 26-year-old Argentina international, in his prime, proven in Europe, with the mobility and work rate to suit Mikel Arteta’s pressing game.
But there’s a problem. Alvarez doesn’t want it.
As reported by The Sun, the Atletico striker is not considering a move to the North London club, despite their interest and the lack of other viable English options. Arsenal’s need for a clinical, all-round centre-forward is clear; Alvarez’s reluctance is even clearer.
Barcelona Blocked, Arsenal Rebuffed
If Arsenal are on the outside looking in, Barcelona are stuck at the front door with no way through.
Barça’s opening offer of £86.4 million has already been turned down by Atletico, who see no reason to blink first. The bid, substantial by any measure, has not moved the needle. The situation between the two LaLiga clubs is described as being at a standstill, with neither side willing to give ground.
Atletico paid £81.5 million to bring Alvarez from Manchester City two years ago, a statement signing designed to refresh Simeone’s attack. Selling him now, even at a profit, would mean ripping out a key piece of their forward line at a time when the club is trying to close the gap at the top of LaLiga and remain competitive in Europe.
So they dig in. Confident, according to the same report, that Alvarez will stay in the Spanish capital beyond this summer.
A Striker in Demand, but Not in a Hurry
Alvarez’s position gives him leverage. At 26, established, and settled in Madrid, he can afford to wait. Arsenal may appeal on a sporting level, Barcelona on a stylistic and historical one, but neither option is forcing a decision.
For now, Atletico hold the cards: a long-term asset, a rejected mega-bid, and a player not agitating for a move.
The window still has time to twist. A new offer from Barcelona could test Atletico’s resolve. Arsenal could push harder, or pivot to another target if it becomes clear Alvarez will not be tempted to England.
For the moment, though, the story sits in limbo. Arsenal want him. Barcelona tried for him. Atletico plan with him.
Whether that remains true when the market closes is the only question that matters.
