Juventus Targets Balogun Amid Arsenal's Pursuit of Álvarez
The transfer market rarely sleeps, but some days it feels especially restless. Across Europe, big clubs are moving pieces on the board, and a cluster of high-profile forwards sit at the centre of it all.
Juventus turn to Balogun
In Turin, Juventus are working through their striker shortlist and Folarin Balogun has moved firmly into view. Gazzetta dello Sport report that the AS Monaco and USMNT forward is being considered as an alternative to Paris Saint-Germain’s Randal Kolo Muani, with the Bianconeri targeting a player who can stretch defences with aggressive runs in behind.
Balogun, 25, will not come cheap. A fee in the region of €50 million is expected to be required, and he is not short of admirers. Chelsea, Paris Saint-Germain and Tottenham Hotspur have all been linked recently, but Juventus see an opportunity if they cannot prise Kolo Muani from Paris.
Arsenal, Gyökeres and the Julián Álvarez puzzle
Arsenal, meanwhile, are sketching out one of the more complex attacking reshuffles of the window.
TalkSPORT report that the Gunners could be prepared to use Viktor Gyökeres in a player-exchange proposal to sign Atlético Madrid forward Julián Álvarez. Atlético are understood to hold genuine interest in the 28-year-old Swede, who scored 14 goals in 36 Premier League matches last season and has been a reliable presence up front.
The problem? Álvarez will be anything but straightforward to land. The Argentina international has identified Barcelona as his preferred destination, and any deal is expected to cost upwards of €150 million. Arsenal have yet to truly accelerate their pursuit, and until they do, the idea of Gyökeres being included in a swap remains more blueprint than reality.
Mikel Arteta is still expected to refresh his attacking options this summer, and Gyökeres could be one of the casualties of that evolution.
The dominoes do not stop there. TEAMtalk report that Juventus, RB Leipzig and several Saudi Pro League clubs are tracking Arsenal winger Gabriel Martinelli, a player whose direct running and intensity have long attracted scouts. Leandro Trossard, by contrast, appears to be on the brink of departure, having agreed a €20 million move to Besiktas.
Barcelona eye Romero and low-cost firepower
In Catalonia, Barcelona are trying to thread the needle between ambition and financial reality.
Fabrizio Romano reports that the club are monitoring the situation of Tottenham Hotspur captain Cristian Romero. The 28-year-old’s representatives have informed Spurs of his desire to seek a new challenge this summer, and Barcelona are in the race despite currently prioritising a forward. Inter are also keeping close tabs on the Argentina defender.
Up front, Sport say Barça are exploring two very different profiles: Hoffenheim striker Fisnik Asllani and free agent Dusan Vlahovic. Asllani, 23, has a €29 million release clause that keeps him within reach of the club’s budget, and he remains admired by the hierarchy. Vlahovic, 26, is available on a free transfer after leaving Juventus, but his salary demands have not impressed Barcelona. Besiktas are ready to take advantage and could hand him a three-year deal.
Amorim turns to familiar face at Milan
At AC Milan, new manager Ruben Amorim is wasting no time shaping the squad in his image.
Calciomercato report that Manchester United defender Noussair Mazraoui has been added to his shortlist. Amorim previously worked with Mazraoui at Old Trafford and now views the 28-year-old as a potential replacement for Pervis Estupiñán, who has been linked with Aston Villa.
Any move, though, will depend heavily on the player. United are not keen to lose him, and a deal is expected to hinge on whether Mazraoui pushes for a switch to San Siro.
Done deals: Greenwood, Tielemans and Diani on the move
While rumours swirl, some clubs have already nailed down significant business.
Mason Greenwood has left Marseille for Fenerbahçe, signing a four-year contract after the Turkish club agreed a €40 million fee. Manchester United, his former club, will receive 35% of that sum thanks to a sell-on clause inserted when he moved to Ligue 1.
United have also been busy on the incoming front. The club have confirmed the signing of Youri Tielemans from Aston Villa after triggering the £35 million release clause in his contract. The midfielder spent three years at Villa Park and played a key role in the side that lifted the Europa League last season, but now returns to Old Trafford to anchor a new project.
In the women’s game, London City Lionesses have pulled off a notable coup by signing former OL Lyonnais striker Kadidiatou Diani. The 31-year-old joins on a three-year deal for a fee of around £500,000, adding proven pedigree to the club’s front line.
Market undercurrent: Camavinga, Jesus and a goalkeeper carousel
Beneath the headline deals, a series of negotiations and enquiries hint at where the window might go next.
Manchester United are discussing a potential move for Real Madrid midfielder Eduardo Camavinga, according to Fabrizio Romano, though the Frenchman’s preference is to remain at the Bernabéu.
Al Nassr and Al Hilal are among the clubs looking at Barcelona midfielder Marc Casado, Sport report, while A Bola state that Sporting CP are not currently considering a move for Barça winger Roony Bardghji despite previous links.
In the Premier League, Crystal Palace are interested in Arsenal midfielder Christian Norgaard, say the Daily Mail, as they look to reinforce their core. TEAMtalk add that AC Milan are leading the race for Arsenal striker Gabriel Jesus, another sign that Arteta’s forward line could look very different by the end of the summer.
On the continent, Tuttosport report that Paris FC are weighing a €30 million move for Juventus and Canada striker Jonathan David, and AS say Real Sociedad and Real Betis are both keen on Southampton forward Leo Scienza, who has already been on the radar of Tottenham and Everton.
Ajax, according to journalist Mike Verweij, remain hopeful of prising goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen from Barcelona, a move that would send shockwaves through the goalkeeping market if it ever materialised.
There is also movement around Serie A and the Premier League. Football Insider report that Juventus midfielder Douglas Luiz is open to a switch to Everton, while Manchester United goalkeeper Radek Vitek is keen to leave amid interest from Celtic.
And in Turin, the goalkeeper search continues. Gazzetta dello Sport say Juventus are ready to refocus on Tottenham’s Guglielmo Vicario after failing to reach an agreement with Aston Villa for Emiliano Martinez.
