Juventus Signs Pape Matar Sarr on Loan from Tottenham
Juventus have struck a deal with Tottenham Hotspur to sign midfielder Pape Matar Sarr in a move that could rise to €30 million, according to transfer reporter Fabrizio Romano.
The 23-year-old Senegal international will head to Turin on an initial loan that includes an option to buy. That clause will not stay optional for long if things go to plan: the deal turns into an obligation to buy if performance-related conditions are met, including Juventus qualifying for the Champions League and Sarr hitting agreed appearance targets over the season.
This is not a move born overnight. Talks accelerated once Sarr made it clear he wanted a new challenge away from North London, where the landscape around him had shifted. Under Roberto De Zerbi, competition for places in midfield intensified after the arrivals of Mateus Fernandes and Sandro Tonali, pushing Sarr down a much more crowded pecking order.
For a while, Monaco looked like the favourites. They were widely viewed as leading the race for the former FC Metz man. But once Juventus came calling, Sarr quickly agreed personal terms with the Italian giants, and the direction of travel changed.
For the Bianconeri, this is a targeted, late-window move. Other midfield pursuits collapsed, and attention turned firmly to Sarr, whose high-energy, box-to-box running and ball-winning edge fit a clear tactical need in Massimiliano Allegri’s squad. Juventus wanted legs, intensity, and someone who can knit phases together from deep. Sarr offers exactly that profile.
Tottenham, meanwhile, gain clarity and potentially cash. Letting Sarr go trims a congested midfield group and could bring in a sizeable fee if the clauses trigger and the deal becomes permanent. Since arriving from Metz in 2021, Sarr has made over 100 competitive appearances for Spurs, showing flashes of his potential but never fully locking down an undisputed starting role.
The next steps are straightforward. With the agreement in place, Sarr has been given the green light to travel to Turin, undergo his medical, and sign his contract before the transfer window shuts.
Tottenham’s work does not stop there. They are braced for a hectic finish to the window and remain in the hunt for another attacker. Everton forward Iliman Ndiaye is at the top of their list, though Spurs face stiff competition from Arsenal and Manchester City as the final days of the market threaten to reshape the Premier League’s attacking options once again.
