Kees Smit Explains Why He Turned Down Real Madrid to Stay at AZ Alkmaar
Kees Smit, the promising midfielder from AZ Alkmaar, recently shared his reasons for rejecting a major summer move to Real Madrid. Despite strong interest from the Spanish giants, the 20-year-old decided to remain in the Eredivisie after crucial talks with his current club.
Real Madrid’s Search for Midfielders
Real Madrid was actively seeking midfield reinforcements during the recent transfer window. Even though they signed former Manchester City star Bernardo Silva and talented youngster Sergio Martinez, the club continued hunting for other options to strengthen their midfield.

“To be honest, at first I had the feeling that I was going to leave, but then it turned out that the coach really wanted me to stay,” said Smit, as quoted by AS. “I feel good here, surrounded by friends and family. That’s why I stayed.”
Smit also revealed that AZ made it clear they didn’t want to let him go late in the transfer window.
“Ten days ago I had a conversation and then AZ didn’t want to let me go anymore,” Smit explained. “I took it positively, because I feel like I’m not done here yet.”
Ignoring Transfer Speculation
Being linked to a club like Real Madrid brings intense media attention. The young Dutchman chose to step back from the constant rumors and focus on what matters.
“At first I read a lot, but then I started to do it less because some things are not true either. I can cope with it quite well. In short, I’m here and I’m happy to be here.”
Focus on Development at AZ Alkmaar
With the transfer window now closed, Smit is fully concentrating on growing his game at the AFAS Stadion. Staying at AZ guarantees him regular first-team action, which is vital for a player his age.
He has already impressed this season, playing a key role as AZ claimed the Johan Cruyff Shield with a 4-0 victory over PSV Eindhoven. Fresh off winning the KNVB Cup last season, Smit is set to continue pushing AZ’s domestic ambitions forward.
