Kieran McKenna Emerges as Top Candidate for Fulham's Managerial Role

Kieran McKenna has emerged as Fulham’s leading candidate to replace Marco Silva, with the Ipswich Town manager understood to be keen on the move despite a hefty buyout clause attached to his contract.

Silva’s departure to Benfica has left a sizeable hole at Craven Cottage. Fulham’s hierarchy want McKenna to fill it. They see the 40-year-old as their number one target, a coach whose stock has risen sharply after a relentless climb with Ipswich.

The problem is price. Promotion to the Premier League triggered an increase in McKenna’s release clause, which now stands at around £8million. For a club that has traditionally tried to avoid paying top dollar for managers, it is a serious decision point.

They are not alone at the table either. Several Premier League clubs have already sounded out McKenna’s camp ahead of next season, aware that his trajectory makes him one of the most coveted young coaches in the country. Celtic have also been linked in recent months, monitoring his situation as they consider their own long-term options.

Fulham do have cheaper alternatives. Former Tottenham boss Thomas Frank is on the list and would cost nothing in compensation after his dismissal by the north London club in February. The Dane’s reputation in England rests on his seven-year spell at Brentford, where he dragged the Bees into the Premier League for the first time and established them as an awkward, high-energy presence in the top flight.

McKenna’s rise, though, carries a different kind of allure.

McKenna’s stock at an all-time high

The Northern Irishman heads into the summer on the back of his third promotion with Ipswich. The Tractor Boys finished second behind Coventry City in the Championship to seal an immediate return to the Premier League, bouncing back at the first attempt after relegation in 2025.

It capped a remarkable run. McKenna delivered back-to-back promotions to take Ipswich from League One to the top division, restoring a club that had drifted into the lower leagues to the elite. That body of work has made him a reference point for any side seeking a progressive, detailed coach capable of building a project rather than simply firefighting.

He signed his current deal at Portman Road in May 2024, tying him down for another two years. Ipswich hold a strong hand. Any club wanting him will have to pay.

Crystal Palace have already explored the possibility. They identified McKenna as a leading candidate during their own managerial search in recent weeks, only to pivot towards a move for Lens boss Pierre Sage as the Conference League winners refined their shortlist.

Bournemouth also circled. McKenna featured among the names linked with the Cherries before they opted for Marco Rose as successor to Andoni Iraola.

Every time a vacancy opens at a stable, ambitious club, McKenna’s name is there. Fulham are the latest to test Ipswich’s resolve.

Fulham search for the next step

Silva leaves behind a platform, not a salvage job. Since guiding Fulham back to the Premier League in 2022, he has kept them clear of the relegation scrap and nudged them towards the top half.

They have not finished lower than 13th since promotion. Last season brought a second successive 11th-place finish and confirmed a fifth straight year of top-flight football. At one stage, they were in genuine contention for European qualification, only to fall a point short of eighth-placed Brighton. That near miss denied Fulham a first continental campaign in 14 years and only the fourth in their history.

This is the context McKenna is weighing. At Ipswich, he is the architect of a revival, adored by a fanbase that has ridden every step of the climb from League One. At Fulham, he would inherit a squad already proven at Premier League level, with the chance to push a settled club into Europe.

Fulham, for their part, must decide how far they are willing to go to land their first choice. Pay the premium for one of the most in-demand managers in the country, or turn to a cheaper, experienced option like Frank.

The chase for McKenna will not last forever. The question now is simple: who moves quickest, and who is prepared to pay the price for a manager on the rise?
