Kilmarnock vs Hibernian: A Clash of Struggling Sides

Kilmarnock and Hibernian meet with the numbers already screaming for both of them.

For Kilmarnock, the damage is obvious. Fourteen goals conceded in their first five Scottish Premiership matches. Only three sides this century have started a top-flight campaign with a leakier defence: Motherwell in 2005-06, Gretna in 2007-08 and Dundee United just two seasons ago. None of those campaigns is remembered fondly.

The problems don’t stop at the back. Kilmarnock haven’t scored in three straight league games. The last time they went longer without a Premiership goal was February 2021, when they stumbled through five in a row without finding the net. When you can’t keep them out and you can’t put them in, pressure builds quickly.

Yet they walk into a ground where the home side are living through their own crisis.

Hibernian have lost five successive home matches in the top flight, something they haven’t endured since August 2010. One more defeat at Easter Road and they step into territory no club wants: six straight home losses, a run last “achieved” by Dundee between February and May 2019. For a support that expects their team to dominate in Leith, that kind of sequence leaves scars.

History, though, offers Hibs a sliver of comfort. Kilmarnock rarely leave these meetings smiling. Just one win in their last 17 Premiership clashes with Hibernian – a 1-0 victory in November 2022 under Derek McInnes – is a stark reminder of how lopsided this fixture has been. Ten of those 17 have gone Hibs’ way, six have been drawn, and Kilmarnock have too often been chasing shadows.

So something has to give. A side that can’t buy a goal against a side that can’t buy a home win. A defence on the wrong kind of historical list facing a club trying to avoid writing a brutal new chapter of its own.
