Kimmich to Remain Germany Captain Under Klopp

Germany may be licking its wounds after a bleak Round of 32 World Cup exit, but one pillar of continuity looks set to remain: Joshua Kimmich as captain.

Speaking at the International Coaches’ Congress in Mainz, sporting director Rudi Völler made it clear he expects Kimmich to continue wearing the armband under incoming head coach Jürgen Klopp.

“I assume so,” Völler said, according to DPA, when asked about Kimmich’s status.

Völler didn’t dress it up. In his view, the Bayern man has already shown enough.

“Jo Kimmich has proven in many international matches that he is a leader and a great captain. I cannot imagine there will be any major change in that position.”

The message was firm, but not a directive. Völler underlined that the final word lies with Klopp, who steps into the role with his own ideas and a reputation for strong dressing-room management. Even so, the signals from the new coach so far have pointed in one direction.

“We have all followed what he has said. You didn’t really get the impression that anything else was planned,” Völler added.

Kimmich only took on the captaincy after Euro 2024, succeeding Ilkay Gündogan. The World Cup exit has reopened debates about Germany’s hierarchy and identity, yet inside the camp the expectation is clear: Klopp will build something new, but he is likely to do it with the same man leading the team out.
