Konstantelias' Impressive Bundesliga Debut Ends in Injury Concern
For 50 minutes, it felt like the perfect Bundesliga debut. Then the stadium fell quiet.
Barely into the second half with Borussia Dortmund 2-0 up, Giannis Konstantelias twisted his knee in a challenge and immediately knew something was wrong. The 23-year-old went down, stayed there, hands over his face, motionless as teammates and opponents looked on.
Dortmund’s physios rushed on and carried out the classic drawer test on the pitch, checking the stability of the knee. The signs were not encouraging. Konstantelias tried to get up, but there would be no heroic continuation. He limped off in the 54th minute, greeted by warm applause from the home crowd, with Marcel Sabitzer coming on in his place.
On the touchline, Niko Kovac went straight to his new right winger, trying to lift his spirits with a few words and an embrace. It barely helped. TV replays had already hinted at something more serious, and the mood around the Dortmund bench shifted from celebration to concern.
Dortmund braced for bad news
After the match, sporting director Ole Book did not sugarcoat the situation when speaking to Sky.
“We should be careful about what we communicate today. But we are certainly concerned about a serious injury,” he said.
Asked directly whether that meant fear of a cruciate ligament tear, Book replied: “That concern is certainly there.” Further examinations will now follow.
Kovac sounded equally worried. “What the doctor told me definitely did not sound good,” the coach admitted, stopping short of going into detail. The optimism of the afternoon had gone.
A debut that had everything
The frustration cuts deeper because Konstantelias had been outstanding up to that point. In his first Bundesliga appearance in black and yellow, he looked as if he had been playing for Dortmund for years.
Together with his Greek compatriot Konstantinos Karetsas, he drove almost every dangerous attack from the runners-up. Quick, sharp on the turn, constantly demanding the ball – he gave Dortmund’s right flank a new dimension.
His big moment came in first-half stoppage time. At 45+1, he latched on to a clever pass from Maximilian Beier from the left. Cutting inside, Konstantelias sized up Sebastiaan Bornauw, slipped the ball through the HSV defender’s legs and benefited from the slight deflection that left goalkeeper Daniel Heuer-Fernandes with no chance. 2-0, and a debut goal to match the occasion.
By the break, Konstantelias looked every bit the ready-made replacement Dortmund had hoped for.
Big fee, big role – and now a big worry
Only days earlier, Dortmund had brought him in from PAOK Saloniki for 26 million euros after a move for Said El Mala from 1. FC Cologne collapsed. The plan was clear: Konstantelias would step into the void left by Karim Adeyemi’s transfer to Barca.
He had already hinted at his quality in the Super Cup against Bayern Munich, a narrow 1-2 defeat in which he still managed to leave a positive impression. This league debut felt like confirmation. Right player, right club, right time.
Now everything hinges on a scan.
Dortmund finally looked to have solved their right-wing question. If the worst fears about Konstantelias’ knee are confirmed, they may be back at square one – and facing a brutal early twist in a season that had just started to promise so much.
