Lionel Messi's Commitment to Inter Miami
Lionel Messi has heard the whispers. At 39, with a career already carved into football’s granite, the easy narrative is a romantic return home, a final dance in Rosario with Newell's Old Boys.
He isn’t interested. Not now. Maybe not ever.
According to Sport, Messi has no intention of leaving Inter Miami or even exploring the idea. The notion of a short farewell stint in Argentina continues to surface, but it runs straight into the reality of his current life: a long contract in Florida, a settled family, and a player who still feels he has more to give in Major League Soccer.
Transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano underlined it. Messi is not considering, not weighing up, not quietly plotting any change of club in the coming months or the coming years. The talk of Newell’s is just that — talk.
“Messi is happy at Inter Miami, despite the recent information circulating about his first club in Argentina,” Romano said, drawing a firm line under the speculation.
The timing is telling. Fresh from being awarded the Princess of Asturias Award for Sport for 2026, Messi’s gaze is fixed firmly on Inter Miami. The accolades keep arriving from Europe, but his day-to-day reality is rooted in the United States, where, as Romano noted, both he and his family feel comfortable and content.
This is not a short-term stopover. Messi’s contract runs until 2028, and he intends to see it out. There are no talks with any other club, no back-channel negotiations, no contingency plans. Inter Miami is not a bridge to something else; it is the destination.
Could it go even longer? Romano did not close that door. An extension beyond 2028 is not off the table, though any decision will depend on one thing Messi has always respected more than sentiment: his body. His physical condition will dictate how long this chapter lasts, not nostalgia or outside pressure.
Away from the pitch, his influence is stretching into new territory. Messi has launched the Messi Cup, an international youth tournament designed to unearth and nurture young talent. It is a clear signal that his vision of the game now runs beyond his own career, into the generations that will follow.
For now, though, the story is simple. No farewell tour in Rosario. No dramatic twist. Lionel Messi, 39 years old and still shaping games, is all-in on Inter Miami — and he plans to be for a long time yet.
