His camp pushed back hard. The criticism, they said, was an “overinterpretation of elements related to a recovery period strictly supervised by the club” and “does not reflect the reality of Kylian's commitment and daily work for the team.”
The message was clear: the holiday was sanctioned, the work was being done, and the player’s dedication should not be in question. He returned to training this week, but not strongly enough, or not long enough, to convince the staff to throw him straight into a must-win Clásico.
For Mbappé, it is another bitter twist. He is on course to finish a second season at the Bernabéu without a major trophy, despite leading the league scoring charts. Personal numbers up, collective return down. That was not the script anyone imagined when he arrived.
Trouble behind the doors
As if losing Mbappé were not enough, Madrid have staggered into this Clásico under a cloud of internal tension.

Arbeloa came out swinging.
“A lot of lies are being said,” he insisted on Saturday. “It's a lie that my players aren't professional. It's a complete lie that my players have shown me a lack of respect, not once... If things that happen in the dressing room are leaked, I think it's a betrayal of Real Madrid and what this badge represents.”
It was a rare public rebuke not just of the rumours, but of whoever is talking from inside. The message was aimed both at the squad and at the ecosystem around them: enough.

For LaLiga neutrals, Mbappé’s absence is a loss. Clásicos are built on star power and storylines, and this one had plenty: the league’s top scorer heading into the lion’s den, chasing a title that is slipping away, under scrutiny for his choices off the pitch.
Instead, Madrid must improvise. They travel to Camp Nou needing to win, carrying the weight of a turbulent week, without the one player most likely to turn a tense, tactical game with a single run or finish.

Mbappé will not be on the pitch when those questions start to be answered. But his absence, his season, and his future will hang over every minute of this Clásico.
