Kylian Mbappé's Absence Hits Real Madrid Ahead of Clásico

Kylian Mbappé will watch the game that could define Real Madrid’s season from afar.

The France forward has been left out of Madrid’s matchday squad for Sunday’s Clásico at Camp Nou, a decision that strips Álvaro Arbeloa’s side of LaLiga’s top scorer on the night they must win to keep the title race alive.

Madrid’s season on the brink

The equation is brutal. Madrid trail Barcelona by 11 points with four games to play. Anything less than victory in Catalonia and Barça are confirmed as champions.

This was always going to be a fraught week for Madrid. Now it arrives without their most decisive player.

Mbappé has not featured since suffering a hamstring injury against Real Betis on April 24. The club had circled the Clásico as a possible return date, but the medical team has clearly decided the risk is too great. Arbeloa will go into the biggest league game of the season without the man who has scored 24 LaLiga goals and carried much of their attacking weight.

Injury, a yacht, and a storm

The absence alone would have been big news. The backdrop has turned it into a full-blown saga.

During his recovery, Mbappé was photographed on a yacht in Italy with his partner, images that ignited a fierce debate in Spain about professionalism, optics and commitment at a time when Madrid’s season was slipping away.

His camp pushed back hard. The criticism, they said, was an “overinterpretation of elements related to a recovery period strictly supervised by the club” and “does not reflect the reality of Kylian's commitment and daily work for the team.”

The message was clear: the holiday was sanctioned, the work was being done, and the player’s dedication should not be in question. He returned to training this week, but not strongly enough, or not long enough, to convince the staff to throw him straight into a must-win Clásico.

For Mbappé, it is another bitter twist. He is on course to finish a second season at the Bernabéu without a major trophy, despite leading the league scoring charts. Personal numbers up, collective return down. That was not the script anyone imagined when he arrived.

Trouble behind the doors

As if losing Mbappé were not enough, Madrid have staggered into this Clásico under a cloud of internal tension.

Midfielders Aurélien Tchouaméni and Federico Valverde were each fined €500,000 by the club after a training ground confrontation that left Valverde needing hospital treatment for a head injury. The size of the fines underlined how seriously the club viewed the incident.

The story immediately fed into a broader narrative: a dressing room losing control, a coach under pressure, a club lurching towards the end of a disappointing campaign.

Arbeloa came out swinging.

“A lot of lies are being said,” he insisted on Saturday. “It's a lie that my players aren't professional. It's a complete lie that my players have shown me a lack of respect, not once... If things that happen in the dressing room are leaked, I think it's a betrayal of Real Madrid and what this badge represents.”

It was a rare public rebuke not just of the rumours, but of whoever is talking from inside. The message was aimed both at the squad and at the ecosystem around them: enough.

A Clásico without its headline act

For LaLiga neutrals, Mbappé’s absence is a loss. Clásicos are built on star power and storylines, and this one had plenty: the league’s top scorer heading into the lion’s den, chasing a title that is slipping away, under scrutiny for his choices off the pitch.

Instead, Madrid must improvise. They travel to Camp Nou needing to win, carrying the weight of a turbulent week, without the one player most likely to turn a tense, tactical game with a single run or finish.

Barcelona, by contrast, can smell blood. A draw is enough to crown them champions in front of their own fans. A win would not just secure the title; it would deepen the sense of crisis in Madrid and sharpen the questions about where this project is heading.

Mbappé will not be on the pitch when those questions start to be answered. But his absence, his season, and his future will hang over every minute of this Clásico.
