Kylian Mbappé Dominates World Cup Attacking Charts
Kylian Mbappé has climbed to the summit of this summer’s World Cup attacking charts – and he’s done it without even needing to be the headline goalscorer on the night.
Under the lights in North America, in France’s final group game against a dangerous Norway side, the Real Madrid forward once again started as Didier Deschamps’ focal point. This time, though, the tournament’s most feared finisher turned provider.
After plundering four goals in France’s opening two matches, Mbappé shifted gear. He dropped off the shoulder, drifted into pockets, and began to pick passes instead of corners of the net. The reward was ruthless: two assists laid on for Ballon d’Or holder Ousmane Dembélé, each one a reminder that Mbappé’s threat stretches far beyond his own scoring column.
The pressure France exerted finally told in those moments. Norway backed off for a split second, and Mbappé punished them with the sort of precision usually reserved for his finishing. Dembélé did the rest, but the architect was clear.
Those two contributions pushed Mbappé out on his own at the top of the combined goals and assists standings at this World Cup. Six direct goal involvements now carry his name, nudging him past Argentina icon Lionel Messi and his own Real Madrid teammate Vinícius Jr.
In a tournament stacked with attacking royalty, Mbappé has seized the early crown. The question now is whether anyone can catch him before the World Cup crown itself is decided.
