Lazio Targets Mauro Icardi but Striker Delays Decision
Lazio have made Mauro Icardi their marquee idea for the No. 9 role. For now, the striker is in no rush to say yes.
The 33-year-old, once one of Serie A’s deadliest finishers with Sampdoria and then Inter, is on the market as a free agent after spells at Paris Saint-Germain and Galatasaray. On paper, it looks like the kind of opportunity sporting directors dream about: proven pedigree, no transfer fee, instant name recognition.
Reality is more complicated.
Top Target, Cold Response
In recent weeks, Icardi has sat at the top of Lazio’s shortlist, sharing that spot with Sassuolo forward Andrea Pinamonti. Angelo Fabiani and his team have been working to bring the Argentine to Rome on a free, but the talks have stalled.
According to Italian journalist Gianluca Di Marzio, Icardi and his entourage initially signalled a willingness to negotiate with Lazio. Doors were open, conversations underway.
Now they’ve been shut, at least temporarily.
The player’s camp has decided to freeze discussions, putting everything on hold while they reassess the landscape. Earlier reports pointed to a sizeable gap between Lazio’s offer and Icardi’s salary demands. Di Marzio, though, underlines a different priority: the project.
Project Over Paycheck
At this stage of his career, Icardi is not just chasing the biggest contract. The former Inter and PSG striker wants a move that makes sense on the pitch, not only on the balance sheet.
He believes he cannot afford a wrong step now. That means he intends to wait, study the options, and only then choose his next destination. The clock that pressures most clubs in the market does not tick as loudly for him.
Free agents can still sign after the transfer window closes. That rule gives Icardi leverage and time, two things Lazio do not enjoy to the same extent.
Lazio’s Race Against the Market
While Icardi bides his time, Lazio cannot. The club need clarity in the centre-forward role and cannot sit indefinitely on a maybe.
He remains their dream signing for the position, but with talks on ice and the player scanning the horizon for other offers, Fabiani and his staff are under pressure to decide: keep waiting for Icardi, or turn fully towards alternatives like Pinamonti.
For Lazio, the margin for hesitation is slim. For Icardi, the next move could define the final chapter of a turbulent, prolific career.
