Leeds Appeal for Second Goal Accreditation in Newcastle Victory

Leeds United have launched an appeal over the accreditation of their second goal in Monday night’s 4-1 win against Newcastle United, after Dominic Calvert-Lewin was denied what he believed was a first-half brace.

The flashpoint came in the 34th minute. James Justin whipped in a cross, Calvert-Lewin attacked it and wheeled away convinced he had headed Leeds into a 2-0 lead. The stadium reaction, the body language, everything pointed to the striker.

Then came the twist.

Replays suggested Jayden Bogle might have had the final touch, and the goal was later officially credited to the defender. Calvert-Lewin, who did get on the scoresheet with Leeds’ third in first-half stoppage time, was left visibly stunned when the referee informed him the earlier effort had been given to his team-mate instead.

The Premier League match centre later confirmed on X that the “goal accreditation panel adjudged Leeds' 34th minute goal as a Bogle goal”, rubber-stamping the decision in the immediate aftermath of the game.

Leeds have not let it rest there. The club have now submitted a formal appeal, triggering the next stage of the process. A second, separate panel will be convened to review the incident again and decide who will be officially recorded as the scorer.
