Leonardo Bonucci Reflects on Guardiola’s Temptation and Juventus Loyalty
Leonardo Bonucci says he was “tempted” by Pep Guardiola and Manchester City, who “courted me for many weeks,” but in the end he could not bring himself to walk away from Juventus.
The former Italy defender, who retired in 2024, is now on Roberto Mancini’s staff with the Azzurri as they prepare for Nations League clashes with Belgium, Turkiye and France. His new life on the touchline has brought back memories of a career that almost took a very different route.
Guardiola’s charm offensive
Guardiola never hid his admiration for Bonucci. A centre-back who could launch attacks like a playmaker was exactly the profile the Catalan coach craved at Manchester City, and Bonucci fit that template perfectly.
“The 2014/15 and 2015/16 seasons allowed me to achieve incredible heights in my career,” Bonucci told World Soccer Agency, via Sport Mediaset. “I played in the Champions League Final against Barcelona in 2015, then a year later was at the European Championship, losing to Germany on penalties after I scored past Manuel Neuer. It was the start of my career truly taking off.”
Those peak years came in black and white. Bonucci joined Juventus in 2010 and, aside from a brief and turbulent spell at Milan in 2017/18, stayed until 2023. During that time, City came calling with money, prestige and Guardiola on the other end of the line.
“For my style of football, the coach who is best suited and most appreciates playing out from the back is Guardiola. So he courted me for many weeks, and let me tell you, being courted by Guardiola is not like any other experience.
You really do start to wobble, and it was tough taking place during the Euros, where I had to be concentrated, but even during the tournament there were some discussions.”
The lure was obvious. The Premier League. A team built to dominate the ball. A coach obsessed with defenders who think like midfielders. Bonucci fit the puzzle.
Heart over Premier League
Yet every time he leaned towards England, something pulled him back to Turin.
“As far as I was concerned, the idea of leaving Juventus made my heart ache. Some days I’d say to myself, oh wonderful, the Premier League and Guardiola, but then the day after I remembered that I had always dreamed of Juventus.”
Juventus were not keen to let him go either, resisting what Bonucci describes as “incredible” offers. The decision was not only professional. It was deeply personal.
His young son Matteo had been diagnosed with a serious illness at the age of two, a moment that reshaped Bonucci’s priorities.
“After the Euros, I spoke to Juve. Matteo’s illness and the fact I didn’t feel 100 per cent about leaving Juve, especially as the club told me that I would not be sold even if an incredible offer came in, made it a normal decision to stay.
“Working with Guardiola would’ve allowed me to have even greater experience, technically and tactically.”
So the move that might have turned him into the defensive fulcrum of Guardiola’s City never happened. Instead, Bonucci stayed where he felt he belonged, anchoring the famous BBC backline with Giorgio Chiellini and Andrea Barzagli and reaching another Champions League Final in 2017.
The Milan detour and lost focus
Ironically, Bonucci did eventually leave Juventus in 2017, but not for England and not for Guardiola. A bitter row with coach Max Allegri pushed him to Milan for a single, chaotic season.
“I had lost my focus with what happened in 2017. I was about to become a pillar of Juventus, that was the path I was meant to be on.”
That detour ended quickly. Bonucci returned to Juventus a year later, once Allegri had gone, and resumed the role he always felt was his destiny.
He never played a single minute under Guardiola. But the choice he made – between the dream of the Premier League and the reality of his life at Juventus – still defines how his career is remembered.
