Lincoln prepares to paint the city red and white this afternoon, as Lincoln City’s promotion-winning squad takes to an open-top bus for a Championship celebration years in the making.
A city centre turned into a stadium
The bus is scheduled to roll away from High Street, at the junction with South Park Avenue, at 14:30 BST. From there, the route cuts straight through the heart of the city, turning familiar commuter roads into something closer to a matchday march.
Tentercroft Street will feel the first surge of noise, before the convoy swings into the city centre via St Mary’s Street, Wigford Way and Silver Street. Shopfronts, office windows, and packed pavements will stand in for stands and terraces, as the Imps’ colours dominate every corner.
The bus will then climb towards one of Lincoln’s defining landmarks. It will loop around Lincoln Cathedral, the club’s triumph framed against the city’s most famous silhouette. For many supporters, that will be the moment it sinks in: Lincoln City, a Championship club, parading beneath the towers that have watched over generations of more modest ambitions.
From the Cathedral, the route runs along Newport and Riseholme Road, taking the party out towards the north of the city. By then, the players will be deep into their second hour of waves, selfies and songs, but this is the kind of afternoon that never feels like hard work.
The parade is expected to conclude at the Lincoln Imp pub at about 16:00 BST, the club has confirmed. It is a fitting final stop: a local landmark welcoming home a team that has just redrawn the map of what is possible here.
For once, the focus is not on the next fixture, the next challenge, or the next step up. Today is about the journey through these streets, and the sight of an open-top bus carrying a Championship club through a city that has waited a long time to celebrate like this.
