Lion City Sailors Sack Coach Jesus Casas Before SPL Season Start
Lion City Sailors have stunned Singapore football by sacking head coach Jesus Casas just five days before they open the new Singapore Premier League (SPL) campaign against Tampines Rovers.
The club announced the move in a brief 30-word statement on Facebook on Sept 1, confirming that they had parted ways with the Spaniard and that assistant coach Varo Moreno will take charge of the first team until further notice.
No explanation. No soft landing. Just a clean break on the eve of a new season.
Casas, 52, had only arrived in February, signing a contract that was supposed to run until the end of the 2027-28 season with the reigning SPL champions. His appointment had been seen as a long-term play: a coach with international pedigree, entrusted with building an era rather than simply chasing the next trophy.
His résumé was substantial. Before taking over Iraq, he worked extensively with youth sides in Spain and then stepped into the English game in early 2018 as assistant manager to Javi Gracia at Watford. In Singapore, he had even been on the shortlist for the national team job, which eventually went to Gavin Lee.
His name has not been far from the international carousel either. The Korea Herald recently reported that Casas had applied for the vacant South Korea national team position and was one of three candidates on the final shortlist for the role.
Now, his time with the Sailors is over before he has even seen out a full year.
Casas had been brought in to replace Serbian coach Aleksandar Rankovic, who was dismissed on Feb 6, a day after a 2-0 home defeat by Cambodian side Svay Rieng in the Asean Club Championship. Rankovic’s record with the Sailors was complicated: he delivered the Singapore Cup three times during a 2½-year tenure and secured an SPL title, yet he also presided over a group-stage exit in Asian Champions League Two, a painful comedown after the club’s dream run to the final the season before.
The Sailors, though, have not exactly been in crisis on the domestic front. On May 3, they clinched back-to-back SPL titles for the first time in their history with a goalless draw against Tampines, finishing the season two points clear of the Stags.
Now the same opponents stand in their way again.

The two sides meet on Sept 6 in the Community Shield at Jalan Besar Stadium at 7.30pm, the traditional curtain-raiser to the 2026-27 SPL season. Moreno will be in the dugout, thrust into the spotlight with barely a week to prepare for the club’s first piece of silverware on offer.
Four days later, the league campaign starts in earnest. The Sailors kick off their SPL season proper on Sept 12 against Hougang United at Bishan Stadium, also at 7.30pm.
A champion club. A vacant hot seat. A season about to start at full tilt. The Sailors have made their move — now they have to live with the turbulence it brings.
