The Inter Miami star has leaned into the occasion himself. On Monday, he went to social media to reveal a commemorative shirt created specifically for his farewell. In a short Instagram video, he showcased the back of the bespoke jersey, then underlined the weight of the moment with a simple line: “One last match… A jersey for a lifetime.”
Numbers that reshaped a nation’s history
The scale of his international career almost defies belief. Across more than 20 years, Messi has made 207 appearances for Argentina, more than anyone else in the country’s history. He leaves as the national team’s record scorer with 125 goals and its leading creator with 68 assists.
Those numbers sit alongside a trophy haul that transformed his relationship with the shirt. After winning Olympic gold in 2008, he spent years carrying the burden of near-misses. The breakthrough finally came with the Copa America in 2021, followed by another title in 2024 and the Finalissima in 2022.
