Liverpool's Defining Summer Deal: The Barcola Saga
Liverpool are edging towards what could be their defining deal of the summer – and it may arrive just as Richard Hughes heads for the exit.
The sporting director is closing in on his move to Al Hilal, bringing an end to a turbulent spell in charge of recruitment at Anfield. His time has been anything but dull. It began with Liverpool parading another Premier League title and has unravelled into a sequence of fraught windows, public rejections and uneasy compromises.
In his first summer, it was Martin Zubimendi who slipped away. In his third, Yan Diomande. The second window brought more joy, with several priority targets finally walking through the door. The issue? Too many of those signings have yet to come close to matching their price tags. The investment is on the books; the impact is still missing.
That gap between outlay and output has fuelled the frustration now bubbling among supporters as Hughes prepares to depart.
When a club hands the keys of recruitment to a sporting director, fans expect a blueprint. Clear profiles. Contingency plans. A department that feels two moves ahead of everyone else. Over the past few weeks, Liverpool have looked anything but.
At times, their strategy has resembled a blindfolded dart throw. Names emerge, talks stall, alternatives don’t quite materialise. For a club that once prided itself on being the smartest operator in the room, it has been an uncomfortable watch.
And the timing could hardly be worse.
The Premier League season is almost upon them. The squad still looks incomplete. Holes remain across the pitch and, crucially, Andoni Iraola is still waiting for the full set of players he needs to imprint his football on this team. This is not the summer Liverpool imagined when they mapped out the post-title era.
Something has to give. Quickly.
Right now, the saga circling Bradley Barcola has become the symbol of this window. Liverpool have been locked in negotiations with Paris Saint-Germain for weeks, possibly months, without landing the decisive blow. It has turned into a stare-down, a straight contest in patience to see who blinks first.
For a squad already light on depth, that is a dangerous game.
Even if Barcola finally arrives, he will not be a cure-all. Liverpool still need another winger who can operate on the right, where Mohamed Salah’s departure has left a gaping void. One name, Ibrahim Mbaye, has been floated as a potential solution, but senior figures at the club have cooled that talk, stressing that any interest remains at an exploratory stage rather than an active pursuit.
So the core problem remains: Liverpool need bodies, they need quality, and they need both urgently. Meanwhile, the realistic pool of targets is shrinking by the day.
There is, at least, one sign of movement. According to Fabrizio Romano, Liverpool are now ramping up their efforts to land Barcola. Speaking on his YouTube channel, the transfer specialist confirmed that talks with PSG are ongoing and that he expects the Reds to accelerate the deal in the coming days.
After weeks of circling, that points towards an agreement finally coming into view for the highly rated French forward.
If Liverpool do get it done, it will arrive at a crossroads moment: a marquee signing, a departing sporting director, and a manager still waiting for the tools to shape the next version of this team.
